This HP LJ 470DN's error point to it very old firmware and I need to update it to at least the 2009 firmware release. HP's firmware packages allows for the firmware to be downloaded to your PC, and sent to the networked printer to be updated. The problem is that the same 49.... error code https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/364230-printer-needs-firmware-upgrade-to-work-but-generate-error-when-i-apply-it is generated every time I do so. HP's support page suggests using the command line copy /b command but either I am getting the syntax wrong, or the printer is not being found. I can browse to the printer and it does work about half the time, so it's not completely down. Has anyone found a way to upload the firmware from say a USB thumbdrive in the machine? Thanks. make a stalling noise and a dialog box will popup that says Firmware Download Error. This box will then clear itself and the unit prints. Sometimes the printer freezes completely. Ideas to try: Update the http://www.mitchellenright.com/2010/07/20/hp-p1505-printer-firmware-download-error/ firmware (as of this post there is only a firmware update for the network version http://forum.support.xerox.com/t5/Hardware/8560-MFP-firmware-will-not-update/td-p/17418 P1505n. But there is a newer driver for the P1505…newer than the one that it shipped with) Check HP's website for more info. There is also a diagnostic tool and a fix it tool which can be run to determine potential issues. Try them. If you use the Driver Check Utility, it will tell you if your hp laserjet driver is out of date and allow you to download the latest one. If you have to download that one, make sure you delete your existing printer and turn the printer off. Then let the setup program Add it back. It will probably prompt you to reboot and then turn the printer on again. Be patient as it discovers the printer.
