way to view any more detail than the console will provide? So that I can learn more about the error. It could be due to low power on the source drive - I am using a 2.5" HDD External enclosure (Mini G2 from Silicon P/L) requires 5VDC/0.5A usb to USB and power (host usb 1 - enclosure usb and enclosure round power split end cable) lead and I am using my MacBook Pro Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012 as the host USB port. The HD inside the enclosure is from an early model G4 Powerbook that was running Tiger OS X. Other answers to input/output error suggest using DiskWarrior so I tried that, DiskWarrior fixed a bunch of flags and repaired permissions but when I ran disk utility again after that to create a new image it failed again for the same reason: input/output error. Using the terminal command (from http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382) dd bs=512 if=/dev/rXX# of=/some_dir/foo.dmg conv=noerror, sync does produce an image but after completion it could not be opened (or mounted) due to a "no mountable file system." mac external-hard-drive disk-utility share|improve this question edited Jul 6 '14 at 8:29 Jens Erat 9,050113047 asked Jul 6 '14 at 7:52 Jacob 103113 Sounds like you have an irreparable error on the disk. You may want to dd the disk using the switch that tells dd to continue upon errors. If dd fails at I/O errors then you may want to take it as a lesson to

When I open the External drive in Finder, It shows it's empty. When I use the option to "Get Info", I get the dialog box stating it has about 300GB Free. http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/147869/external-hard-disk-showing-input-output-error I tried to access External Drive using Terminal, but I had no luck. Checking in Disk Utility, It showed that I have many number of files but ZERO folders. I tried to "repair disk", in the process the external Drive got unmounted in the process. I checked this drive on Windows. I was able to open almost all the folders but I wasn't able to copy anything onto the external drive. One folder caused my windows computer to freeze. Then I connected the drive back onto my MacBook Pro and tried to access the drive through terminal (this time it worked!) and then I tried to delete a folder with rm command, I got an "input/output error". I tried to enter in to the folder with "cd" command but my terminal got frozen. What should i do to recover the files in that folder? What can I do to fix my External Hard disk ? terminal finder hard-drive external-disk share|improve this question asked Oct 1 '14 at 4:45 Jash Jacob 2,76541939 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted If Windows is having trouble opening various folders and is causing your driv

It has been given to me without hard drive in it and I have no clue about what it went through. The laptop works perfectly booting from Ubuntu cd. I have input output two hard drives to try with, both “Western Digital” and both 160 gb: Hard Drive 1: WD1600BEKT, brand new guaranteed by the ebay seller to be specifically compatible with my MacBook Pro A1150; Hard Drive 2: WD1600BEVT, pretty old. I've installed both drives (one per time obviously) in a Dell Inspiron 1525, installed Ubuntu OS and both drives worked perfectly. Now I install the drives in the MacBook, and every time I do so I call one SMC reset and three PRAM resets. input output error 50% of the times the drive is detected and a faulty Ubuntu OS is loaded. 50% of the times the drive is not seen at all and I get the question mark folder. Same goes when I boot the pc from Ubuntu cd, 50% of the times the hard drive is shown on “Disks” application, 50% it doesn't appear. When “Disks” shows the hard drive, still the hard drive is not really accessible, only one time out of dozens SMART data was available. Time to install Ubuntu, or at least try: 50% of the times the hard drive is not detected and installation cannot be initiated; 50% of the times the hard drive is detected, the installation seems to be started but after few seconds I get “Input/output error during read on /dev/sda” I've replaced the hard drive cable and after that I went through the exact same experiences. I've set the hard drives jumper setting to SSC first, RPS after and still no luck. Any help will be highly appreciated.
