Use The Legacy C# And Vb Expression Evaluators
18 down vote favorite 5 I've encountered a problem in expression evaluator of visual studio 2015 that says "Internal error in the expression evaluator", after some investigations i found that this is caused by an assembly that is loaded using reflection. This assembly wouldn't throw any exceptions but after that, vs exp evaluator will fail. This is not the only assembly that i load, there are some good visual studio 2015 debug internal error in the expression evaluator working ones that don't influent the evaluator. To overcome this issue i had to check 'Menu > options > debugging > Use Managed Compatibility Mode' but this disables the 'Edit & Continue' feature, what can i do? properties of the causer assembly: • its name is the same as the main assembly (i changed its name but nothing happened) • all of my projects are using dotNet 4.5 • all root namespaces are same (all of the assemblies are so) thanks c# debugging visual-studio-2015 share|improve this question asked Dec 31 '15 at 10:55 Mehran Khazaeizadeh 9114 1 I´m having the same problem Legacy option didn´t fix it. –Fernando Urkijo Cereceda Feb 23 at 23:23 Similar question Get "Internal error in the expression evaluator" on "Add watch" function when trying to debug WCF service code (MSVS 2013) –Michael Freidgeim Mar 24 at 4:20 The same happens to me when trying to test a Web API 2 controller... –Marcus Aug 30 at 8:16 I have a similar problem when debugging c++ cli. In case you faced this issue, when your favorite Visual Studio 2015 IDE http://stackoverflow.com/questions/34545354/internal-error-in-the-expression-evaluator started throwing the error "Internal error in the expression evaluator" while evaluating any variable in debug mode or in the watch window, this is due to a bug and there's an simple tweak to resolve this error. To resolve this error, open the Visual Studio Options page from the Tools -> Options menu. Then select the tree node labeled "Debugging". At the right panel, find for the settings that says "Use the legacy C# http://www.kunal-chowdhury.com/2016/05/internal-error-in-the-expression-evaluator.html and VB expression evaluators" and check it as shown below: Click "OK" to save the options/settings of Visual Studio. Assuming that you're debugging a 32-bit process, you do that by attaching (Managed) to devenv.exe (with another instance of VS), then change your Exception Settings to break when any managed Exception is thrown: Next, re-evaluate whatever's giving the error. When the debugger stops in the attached instance of VS, do "Debug > Save Dump As..." If you're debugging a 64-bit process, the steps are the same, but you'll want to start by attaching to msvsmon.exe instead of devenv.exe. If you don't hit an Exception in msvsmon.exe, you'll need to try attaching to devenv.exe and repeating steps again (most often, then Exception will be in msvsmon though). If
