AM by Davelicious Critical SChannel Errors in Event Log on Domain Controllers when a Nessus Scan is ran against them. havoc64 Dec 27, 2012 7:37 AM Hello all,Has anyone else noticed a Bunch of SChannel Errors in the event logs https://community.tenable.com/thread/5584 on their Domain Controllers when a Nessus Scan is ran against them? The Event ID's are http://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0000634 36874 and 36888. When looking at the event log and the Nessus.messages log it appears that it happens when an SSL NASL of some sort it launched against the server.I contacted Support and they said this is the first they have heard of it. I am trying to see if it's happening to anyone else. Our Servers are all Windows 2008 and our internal error Domain Functional Level is also Windows 2008.It's easiest to see if you launch a scan with all the General and Windows Plugins enabled and then as soon as the scan is done, check the event log of the Domain Controller that Nessus Scan was ran against. Below is a screen shot of the errors in my event log. Thanks for any and all replies.Mike 31286Views Tags: none (add) windows Content tagged with windows , ssl Content tagged with the following fatal ssl , log Content tagged with log , id Content tagged with id , error Content tagged with error , event Content tagged with event , schannel Content tagged with schannel , 36888 Content tagged with 36888 Re: Critical SChannel Errors in Event Log on Domain Controllers when a Nessus Scan is ran against them. rongula Jan 2, 2013 5:59 AM (in response to havoc64) Can you post some more detailed example logs? » Microsoft » Event ID 36888 KB ID 0000634 Dtd 16/07/12 Problem This was driving me nuts on my Windows 7 x64 Laptop. Log Name: System Source: Schannel Event ID: 36888 Task Category: None Level: Error User: SYSTEM Description: The following fatal alert was generated: 10. The internal error state is 10. I was getting a dozen of these an hour! Solution This error is caused (from what I can gather) by an error in certificate negotiation, your machine is trying to initiate communications with another machine/server using a certificate and TLS and the process is producing this error TLS1_ALERT_UNEXPECTED_MESSAGE (10). 1. If your browser is the cause of the problem, then simply open Internet Options > Advanced > Untick all the TLS options > Apply. 2. However this DID NOT WORK for me, so something is programmatically chatting from my laptop using TLS. The bottom line is, this problem is probably not even on your machine, so I'm simply going to disable SCHANNEL logging. Note: If your Error does NOT say "The following fatal alert was generated: 10. The internal error state is 10". then I would suggest NOT doing this. 3. In the search run box type regedit and navigate to the following key; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Control > SecurityProviders > SCHANNEL Change the EventLogging value from 1 to 0 (that's a zero).
