jammed lens, or a malfunctioning lens. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canon Powershot), "ACCESS" error (Sony Cybershot), "Zoom Error" (Fuji Finepix), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak Easyshare), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (Nikon Coolpix and some other camera makers lately are using this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, camera lens won't retract but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move. The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism, that's all she wrote. I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. Note that this problem applies to ALL cameras with telescopic lens barrel (optical) zoom. With Samsung's release of the Galaxy S4 Zoom, I'm really curious to see if this will also be a issue/problem with this camera phone (and ot

About a week ago, I went on a trip, took pictures the whole trip, everything was ok. When I got home, and tried to turn the camera to move the pictures to my PC, I got an error: "Lens error, restart camera" The lens doesn't even start to open, doesn't make any sounds of trying even. If you don't have a card reader in your computer(s), they are available inexpensively, for example: amazon.com/Mini-Memory-Card-Reader-Writer/dp/B000FNDWLQ/… –coneslayer May 6 '11 at 13:54 2 I got this issue with my camera too, when my son dropped it in the sand. The lens mechanism retraction is very fragile. One grain of sand is enough to break the camera. In our case, we got the camera for less than a week, so we returned the camera for an exchange. –decasteljau May 6 '11 at 14:01 add a comment| 9 Answers 9 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. I have written a blog post about some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but they're worth a try. share|improve this answer edited Oct 6 '11 a

How can I fix this problem? Submitted: 4 years ago. Category:Camera and Video Share this conversation Expert: Russell A. replied4 years ago. Hi,While the lens appears to be extended, it most likely does not reach the correct sensor point and causing the shutdown. Lens errors are a common problem. Dirt can get into the gears or canon a560 lens the lens can become misaligned from being carried in pockets, purses or from impact. Start out by holding the camera "lens down" and lightly tapping the body while switching it on and off. Next try canned compressed air in the space between the lens barrel and the camera body. With newer cameras I am hesitant to suggest using the more invasive of these options since they include some more extreme procedures that may cause further damage the unit and void the warranty, if not done correctly, but with the older one, they may save you an expensive repair bill. The two links below give step by step DIY instructions on troubleshooting and attempting to fix this problem. A Canon camera is used to demonstrate these procedures so, the lens structure of these compact cameras is the same so the examples do apply to this unit. These procedures are effective about 60% of the time. Click on or copy and paste the links into your browser.
