common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canon Powershot), "ACCESS" error (Sony Cybershot), "Zoom Error" (Fuji Finepix), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak Easyshare), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (Nikon Coolpix and some other camera makers lately are using this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, lens error restart camera canon powershot s3 is then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move. The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism, that's all she wrote. I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. Note that this problem applies to ALL cameras with telescopic lens barrel (optical) zoom. With Samsung's release of the Galaxy S4 Zoom, I'm really curious to see if this will also be a issue/problem with this camera phone (and other phones with optical zoom). I predict (on June 16, 2013) that it will, as most people carry their phones in pockets and

I'd like to get to the gears that extend and http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html retract the lens. How would I do that? What else should I try? Thanks! posted by GregWithLime to Technology (10 answers total) My girlfriend's PowerShot A630 had a similar error and she ended up sending it to Canon to get fixed under warranty.posted by o0dano0o at 6:31 AM on November 12, 2007 No answers, just a word of warning: There is probably a capacitor inside your camera http://ask.metafilter.com/76034/Powershot-Lens-Error that can give you a fairly decent shock. Cameras use capacitors to hold a high amount of charge to fire the flash. I speak from the experience of being impressively shocked by a D70.posted by knave at 7:41 AM on November 12, 2007 If it's E18, you can find more info here: http://www.e18error.com/posted by AaRdVarK at 7:54 AM on November 12, 2007 You will fail. I tried to fix a problem with my Cannon SD450 where the gears were somehow jammed and the lens wouldn't go in and out anymore. I took it apart and just gave it up for lost. Those things are packed so tightly in there, with so much electronics and about 1000 tiny little screws all of different sizes. Unless you have significant experiance with this sort of thing, you will never get it back together. I wasn't even able to figure out how to get to the mechanism I was seeking without breaking some parts. If you do attempt it, make sure you have another camera on hand to take pictures of each layer of the onion as you go. You'll also want some way to label and store each screw you take out so you kno

I can't afford another camera this summer and I've been looking and haven't found one for my christmas lens error list anyway! I should get a lot more shots from this one now. Thank you, thank you, thank you! EmailPosted June 6, 2009 5:20 pmBarbara ShowellMy S2IS just started the E18 thing. I've had 2 other less expensive powershots also develop the problem. LOVE the camera's. The less expensive ones just gave me reason to buy up a level....this time going to try and fix the problem, and if I can't, switch brands. Posted June 5, 2009 10:20 amEdI dropped my IXUS55 and saw this error. The lens wouldn't retract, when I turned on it would make a whirring noise as it attempted to retract the lens, but then failed and came up with the E18 message. After reading this web site I tried pushing and twisting the lens in as I powered on. After a couple of goes it made a click and went back in. Camera now seems to be working properly Posted June 5, 2009 9:18 amPaulJust received E18 message after changing the batteries on my PowerShot A620. Mysteriously went away after I let it sit a awhile stuck in the "on" mode and tried it again. This is the first time this has happened to me in the two years I've had the camera. Thanks for the website.
