Another problem mentioned on the site blames a sticky iris in the lens, caused by grease entering inside from the microphones built into the lens. The buildup freezes up the ability of the lens to open. Although the use of the E18 error coding made this problem seem to be the particular domain of Canon cameras, the problem is canon lens error 01 actually quite common throughout all cameras with telescopic lens barrels. As a result, Canon has since dropped the use of this error code in its newer cameras. In its place it has adopted the more common term "lens error" that other manufacturers use. As such, its newer cameras report this term when the problem occurs. information on the topic from Wikipedia: The E18 error is an error message on Canon digital cameras. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting.[1] The error has https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E18_error become notorious in the Canon user community as it can completely disable the camera, requiring expensive repairs. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E18_error) This is a fairly prevalent problem with the PowerShot cameras, and a class action lawsuit was filed (but dismissed) against Canon: A Chicago law firm, Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates, has already filed a class action,[4] while the law firm of Girard Gibbs & De Bartolomeo LLP are investigating this camera flaw and https://blog.wolffmyren.com/2008/10/23/e18-error-fixed-canon-powershot-sd450/ may issue a class-action lawsuit against Canon.[5] There is at least one other.[6] Although the suit was dismissed in a court of law, the plaintiffs are appealing. Fortunately, at least in my case, the fix did not require returning the camera to a Canon repair facility or having to take unreasonably complex steps. My solution for the PowerShot SD450/IXUS 55 follows: (You’ll need a very small Philips head screwdriver, #00, to remove the screws) There are six screws holding the metal frame of the camera body together, two on each side, and two on the bottom. Remove all screws, pop the strap-hook plate (sorry, probably not the most technical term there), then gently lift the front plate off by pulling up from the bottom, and remove the back plate in the same fashion. These should come off relatively easily. This is what the camera should look like as you remove the plates: Now, looking from the top of the camera, you should see a small motor on the left side, as shown below (it’s beneath the cable with a “22” written on it): Take your screwdriver (or another small instrument) and gently try to rotate the plastic piece attached to the motor on the left side, as s

the warranty of the camera has ran out it's not worthwhile to repair it by Canon in most cases. With a little luck you can repair the damage by yourself.. Thanks a lot to Markus who has written the repair guide. With a little fine motorical luck and some patience, following this guide can help you repair your camera. The repair costs with Canon amount to approx. 260, - EUR and aren't worthwhile themselves in most cases. One should, however, check whether the warranty for the camera still is in effect and whether Canon would cover repair costs. IXUS World is not at all responsible for possible damage to devices or persons! It cannot be guaranteed that the camera will be 100% functional again after the repair. Necessary Tools: - screwdriver Philips size 00 - cotton swabs - alcohol - NO grease, silicone spray, etc. The removal of the error E18 is demonstrated with a model of the digital IXUS. The internal structure of other models of the IXUS (like the USA ELPH) series differs slightly, so that the steps made here can serve as basis for all models. Here's the camera to be repaired. In the display we can see clearly the reference to the error E18. First, unscrew the housing rear wall, then the front part and afterwards the middle framework with trip etc. (except IXUS 400) can be removed. Preserve screws well! This ring protects the lens of the IXUS against penetrating dirt (missing with IXUS 300/330). Wave well! The motherboard is shielded with a coated foil. Now the two screws are removed and the screen is opened by unfolding the foil off of the motherboard. Now the two remaining screws fastening the motherboard can be removed. Now we must detach this cable. Pull (or push) the "key" for the connector out (as shown with the arrows). Once that's been released, the cable will just slip out of the connector.
