Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a “click” as it pops back into place. Try powering the camera back on. i've found it on the net, here is the original text - if that won't help - go to the source page and read about the other options --------------------------------------------------

Share this conversation Expert: Russell A. replied5 years ago. Hi,Lens errors are a common problem. Dirt can get into the gears or the lens can become misaligned from being carried in pockets, purses or from impact. With newer cameras I am usually hesitant to suggest these options since they include some more extreme procedures that may cause further damage if not done correctly, but, since yours has been dropped, and there is no chance of warranty repair, they may save you an expensive repair bill. The two links below give step by step DIY instructions on troubleshooting and attempting to fix this problem. You can skip the dirt and sand steps. A Canon camera is used to demonstrate these procedures but, the lens structure of these compact cameras is the same so the examples do apply to this

I took the battery's out including the small date battery, replaced and that has seemed to correct the error. I also low formatted the SD card because there had been an error on a file at one stage. -- SteveT SteveRT's gear list:SteveRT's gear list Canon PowerShot S2 IS Canon PowerShot SX1 IS Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Sony SLT-A77 Sony 70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM +2 more Reply Reply with quote Complain HenryUK • Regular Member • Posts: 334 Re: Lens Error- please restart Camera S3 IS In reply to COLC • Oct 27, 2011 I had an S2 IS that did the same thing. The micro ultrasonic motor (USM) that operates the lens extension/retraction and zooming mechanism wears out and won't drive properly.Other causes can be sand in the gears or physical damage. It is usually hopelessly uneconomic to get Canon to do a repair. You might as well buy a secondhand one.I have seen micro USM and complete optical units on eBay. It's possible to replace them yourself if you are mechanically dextrous and have the right tools. It's quite a tricky procedure though. -- Henry HenryUK's gear list:HenryUK's gear list Canon
