Canon PowerShot “Lens error, restart camera”? up vote 7 down vote favorite 2 I've had a Canon PowerShot A1100 IS camera for almost a year now. About a week ago, I went on a trip, took pictures the whole trip, everything was ok. When I got home, and tried to turn the camera to move the pictures to my PC, I got an error: "Lens error, restart camera" The lens doesn't even start to open, doesn't make any sounds of trying even. What lens error restart camera canon sd1400 can I do to fix this? lens canon point-and-shoot troubleshooting error share|improve this question edited Dec 19 '11 at 14:16 Imre 25.7k783149 asked May 6 '11 at 13:17 Yochai Timmer 138115 If the problem is keeping you from moving your photos to the PC, you can remove the SD card from the camera and use a card reader to read it. If you don't have a card reader in your computer(s), they are available inexpensively, for example: amazon.com/Mini-Memory-Card-Reader-Writer/dp/B000FNDWLQ/… –coneslayer May 6 '11 at 13:54 2 I got this issue with my camera too, when my son dropped it in the sand. The lens mechanism retraction is very fragile. One grain of sand is enough to break the camera. In our case, we got the camera for less than a week, so we returned the camera for an exchange. –decasteljau May 6 '11 at 14:01 add a comment| 9 Answers 9 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. I have written a blog post about some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but they're worth a try. share|improve this answer edited Oct 6 '11

Your help in sharing will http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/11755/what-should-i-do-about-canon-powershot-lens-error-restart-camera be appreciated, and karma will prevail! This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera, a stuck lens, jammed lens, or a malfunctioning lens. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canon Powershot), "ACCESS" error (Sony Cybershot), "Zoom http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html Error" (Fuji Finepix), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak Easyshare), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (Nikon Coolpix and some other camera makers lately are using this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move. The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intrer

I also low formatted the SD card because there had been an error on a file at one stage. -- SteveT SteveRT's gear list:SteveRT's gear list Canon PowerShot S2 IS Canon PowerShot SX1 IS Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Sony SLT-A77 Sony 70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM +2 more Reply Reply with quote Complain HenryUK • Regular Member • Posts: 334 Re: Lens Error- please restart Camera S3 IS In reply to COLC • Oct 27, 2011 I had an S2 IS that did the same thing. The micro ultrasonic motor (USM) that operates the lens extension/retraction and zooming mechanism wears out and won't drive properly.Other causes can be sand in the gears or physical damage. It is usually hopelessly uneconomic to get Canon to do a repair. You might as well buy a secondhand one.I have seen micro USM and complete optical units on eBay. It's possible to replace them yourself if you are mechanically dextrous and have the right tools. It's quite a tricky procedure though. -- Henry HenryUK's gear list:HenryUK's gear list Canon PowerShot SX260 HS Canon EOS 7D Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM +3 more Reply Reply with quote Complain COLC OP • New Member • Posts: 15 Re: Lens Error- please restart Camera S3 IS In reply to SteveRT • Oct 27, 2011 Thanks for replies, I cannot find any reference to removing the date battery; are you able to advise the procedure?
