Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a “click” as it pops back into place. Try powering the camera back on. i've found it on the net, here is the original text - if that won't help - go to the source page and read about the other options -------------------------------------------------------

Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try. Was this answer helpful? Canon lens error (E18 error) happens when the lens gets stuck while trying to extend or retract. The lens will get stuck in the extended position, and refuse to move either to focus the lens or to retract whe

I also low formatted the SD card because there had been an error on a file at one stage. -- SteveT SteveRT's gear list:SteveRT's gear list Canon PowerShot S2 IS Canon PowerShot SX1 IS Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Sony SLT-A77 Sony 70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM +2 more Reply Reply with quote Complain HenryUK • Regular Member • Posts: 334 Re: Lens Error- please restart Camera S3 IS In reply to COLC • Oct 27, 2011 I had an S2 IS that did the same thing. The micro ultrasonic motor (USM) that operates the lens extension/retraction and zooming mechanism wears out and won't drive properly.Other causes can be sand in the gears or physical damage. It is usually hopelessly uneconomic to get Canon to do a repair. You might as well buy a secondhand one.I have seen micro USM and complete optical units on eBay. It's possible to replace them yourself if you are mechanically dextrous and have the right tools. It's quite a tricky procedure though. -- Henry HenryUK's gear list:HenryUK's gear list Canon PowerShot SX260 HS Canon EOS 7D Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM +3 more Reply Reply with quote Complain COLC OP • New Member • Posts: 15 Re: Lens Error- please restart Camera S3 IS In repl
