If you don't have a card reader in your computer(s), they are available inexpensively, for example: amazon.com/Mini-Memory-Card-Reader-Writer/dp/B000FNDWLQ/… –coneslayer May 6 '11 at 13:54 2 I got this issue with my camera too, when my son dropped it in the sand. The lens mechanism retraction is very fragile. One grain of sand is enough to break the camera. In our case, we got the camera for less than a week, so we returned the camera for an exchange. –decasteljau May 6 '11 at 14:01 add a comment| 9 Answers 9 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Lens errors are fairly

Category:Camera and Video Share this conversation Expert: Russell A. replied5 years ago. Hi,The fact that the camera turns on is a good sign. It may only require a small amount of physical manipulation to realign. Lens errors are a common problem. Dirt can get into the gears or the lens can become misaligned from being carried in pockets, purses or from lens error canon impact, like yours. With newer cameras I am usually hesitant to suggest these options since they include some more extreme procedures that may cause further damage if not done correctly, but, since yours was dropped and there is no chance of warranty repair, they may save you an expensive repair bill. The three links below give step by step DIY instructions on troubleshooting and attempting to fix this problem. The lens structure of these compact cameras is the same so the examples do apply to this unit. These procedures are effective about 60% of the time. The standard "rule of thumb" is if the repair cost is greater than 50% of the value of the camera, it is not worth it. A used or refurbished Powershot SD1400is can be purchased for about $75-$145 and a new one (with warranty) for around $200.If, and only if my answer to your question is helpful, please click the green Accept button and leave Positive Feedback. Ordinarily that would be acceptable, you would just send it back to Canon and get a new one. But because Canon refuses to admit this is a problem and Canon will not fix it for free, this problem becomes a fatal one. So when you buy one of these cameras I think you should be aware of the risks involved. That is why I posted all these links.I understand why Canon is not admitting this problem and will not fix it. It takes a technician a lot of work to completely disassemble the camera. Also probably the percentage of cases is high enough that it would cost them a lot of money to send out a free camera for all the lens errors. Finally it costs Canon a lot of money to reengineer the lens drive mechanism to fix the flaw. It is easier and cheaper for them to alienate a certain percentage of customers who have no recourse but to complain ab
