About a week ago, I went on a trip, took pictures the whole trip, everything was ok. When I got lens error canon s100 home, and tried to turn the camera to move the pictures to my PC, I got an error: "Lens error, restart camera" The lens doesn't even start to open, doesn't make any sounds of trying even. The lens mechanism retraction is very fragile. One grain of sand is enough to break the camera. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try. Was this answer helpful? I took the battery's out including the small date battery, canon camera lens replaced and that has seemed to correct the error. The micro ultrasonic motor (USM) that operates the lens extension/retraction and zooming mechanism wears out and won't drive properly.Other causes can be sand in the gears or physical damage.It is usually hopelessly uneconomic to get Canon to do a repair. You might as well buy a secondhand one.I have seen micro USM and complete optical units on eBay. It's possible to replace them yourself if you are mechanically dextrous and have the right tools.
