Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a “c

Gepubliceerd op 13 aug. 2013It seems to be an inherent software problem with the S3 that when zooming the camera shuts down. Mine started doing this within a year of purchase. The lens error on start up is due to a small electric motor that resides within the lens unit. The motor turns the plastic geared wheels which rotate the lens inner housing which extends or retracts the lens. When the motor starts to play up with age or use, the lens will not extend or retract correctly and the camera reports a lens error. If the motor stops working altogether the lens will jam and the lens unit needs to be replaced. It is impossible to get moisture or sand or dirt in the lens since it is a sealed unit. Neil is online now My Canon Power Shot S3 is showing a lens error, restart camera Resolved Question: My Canon Power Shot S3 is showing a 'lens error, restart camera' message. For a while prior to this it continued to open and close the lens but sounded under strain. Now it is not opening at all lens error and sounds jammed. How do I fix this issue / restart camera without sending off to Canon factory as we really the need camera for events in the next couple of weeks? All help greatly appreciated.Ian Submitted: 5 years ago. Category:Camera and Video Share this conversation Expert: Neil replied5 years ago. Hi IanThere are a number of things you can try:1. Ensure batteries are fully charged2. Look carefully between the lens and the camera body for any sand or other dirt etc3. lens error restart Try turning the camera with the lens facing down and shake to dislodge anything stuck4. Try removing batteries and memory card, wait 2 minutes and refitIf no luck then we have to try some things that could possibly result in damaging your camera so should only be tried if happy to take that risk...5. Try thumping the camera into your other hand, by thumping into your hand you are trying to jar the mechanism loose, by using your hand you will hopefully not do it too hard or it will hurt. You may need to do this a dozen or so times in different places to work. I have found the flat of the camera bottom into the flat of your hand best..6. If the lens is stuck in the out position then remove the batteries and try twisting the lens first one way then the other, do not apply excessive force when doing this or you can break gears, you are trying to reposition not force... Likewise if the lens looks like it is crooked you can try pushing it back into position. This has a higher chance of doing more harm than the thump so please be careful...7. Dismantle the camera, not for the faint hearted, you need to dismantle the lens assembly into the main body of the cameraIf no luck then only other option is a serviceman I'm afraid, be sure to get a quotes as camera repairs can be uneconomical Neil

Your help in sharing will be appreciated, and karma will prevail! This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera, a stuck lens, jammed lens, or a malfunctioning lens. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canon Powershot), "ACCESS" error (Sony Cybershot), "Zoom Error" (Fuji Finepix), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak Easyshare), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (Nikon Coolpix and some other camera makers lately are using this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move. The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism, that's all she wrote. I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. Note that this problem applies to ALL cameras with telescopic lens barrel (optical) zoom. With Samsung's release of the Galaxy S4 Zoom, I'm really curious to see if this will also be a issue/problem with this camera phone (and other phones with optical zoom). I predi
