I was discouraged but I kept doing it and I actually tried to lighting bang the camera on he table while opening the camera and it worked! Moral of the story there is probably dust but it won't get out the first time. Try it a couple of times and bang it very gently on the table. Good luck! Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try. Was this answer helpful? Yes No Voted Undo Score 2 Cancel Add a co

At least that's what the LCD reports when I try to turn it on.On the one hand I'm happy it died. It's truley a horrible camera for taking pictures/videos of kids. I can't wait to get a different camera that at the minimum has a dedicated video record button and lens error can take pictures during video (does canon have a P&S that does this?).On the other hand I'm cheap and it is still in warranty.Has anyone had luck getting canon to fix (on their dime) cameras that develop a "lens error"? Googling it looks like the chances are slim but I'd be interested in any experience getting "lens lens error restart error" fixed under waranty on canon P&S.Thanks!!!!! When I turned it on, it said "lens error". I called Canon's customer service and got the camera repaired without it costing me anything (other than the shipping cost). Of course I didn't tell them how it happened...just what the problem was. I'm not sure if they would have fixed it free of charge had I told them the problem was because of my clumsiness...
