Check the space around the lens and see if the spacing is equal distance all the way around. Sometimes you can use a vacuum cleaner and apply vacuum suction on the lens while powering it on. this may remove some of the dirt/debris and free the mechanism. If none of that works, you may have to replace the lens. The guide for that is he

Your help in sharing will be appreciated, and karma will prevail! This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera, a stuck lens, lens error jammed lens, or a malfunctioning lens. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canon Powershot), "ACCESS" error (Sony Cybershot), "Zoom Error" (Fuji Finepix), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak Easyshare), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (Nikon Coolpix and some other camera makers lately are using this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at canon g12 lens all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move. The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism, that's all she wrote. I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. Note that this problem applies to ALL cameras with telescopic lens barrel (optical) zoom. With Samsung's release of the Galaxy S4 Zoom, I'm really curious to see if this will also be a issue/problem with this camera phone (a
Instructable »ANSWERS : Technologysearch answers:Ask a QuestionCanon Powershot SD1100. The lense is stuck and won't retract. Any suggestions?Hi most brilliant community- Unfortunately, I'm very accident prone and dropped my Canon Powershot SD1100. The lense will not retract. When I turn it on you can hear the motor whirring, but it's not taking the lens in. An error message pops up sayin "lense error, restart camera" which I've done. I have also googled this errorhave been to many sites that tell you to hit it, or push this button while pushing that buttonbutI can't seem to get it to budge. I did open it up to take a look and the lense is, of course fully enclosed. Most replacement lenses are arount $80 w/o labor. I am convinced that this camera can be saved (without mucho dollars) Has anyone ever taken one apart and more importantly, mended a camera such as this? Can a klutzy but resourceful girl (me) fix this on my own? I have a second camera (same type) that i spilled a melted frosty all over and now it wont turn on. I'll leave that situation for another time! Thank you to anyone and everyone who has any suggestions! Yes, I made it! frollard6 years agoReplyPoint and shoot cameras are a nightmare to disassemble and reassemble. They are well worth the labour to get them fixed. It's not impossible by any stretch, and you have nothing much to lose trying to fix a broken camera. I would personally pay to get it done based on my experience taking these damn things apart.daniel_reetz6 years agoReplyHave you been to http://www.e18error.com/ ? It's the single largest repository for lens error fixes for Canon Powershot cameras. I've used some of their tricks, and some work, though not always. Another thing to do is to search eBay for a broken Sd1100, but one that has, for example, a broken screen. I have repaired several Powershot A590's in this way -- mix and matching units broken in different ways. daniel_reetz daniel_reetz6 years agoReplyHere are two SD1100s on ebay for almost no money. I can't tell if the lens mechanisms are any good. http://cgi.ebay.com/Lot-2-Canon-Powershot-SD1100-Dig-Cameras-SALVAGE-/280521963986RelatedMake Basic Infrared Thermal Imaging Camera For Cheap !
