actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism, that's all she wrote. I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. Note that this problem applies to ALL cameras with telescopic lens barrel (optical) zoom. With Samsung's release of the Galaxy S4 Zoom, I'm really curious to see if this will also be a issue/problem with this camera phone (and other phones with optical zoom). I predict (on June 16, 2013) that it will, as most people carry their phones in pockets and purses. If it occurs, Fix 5a would likely be the best technique to correct this problem. A camera owner that suffers this problem may have no recourse for having the camera repaired. M

Yes No Voted Undo Score 9 Cancel Comments: I'm also experiencing this error message, however... • the camera turns on, • the lens extends outwards, • the lens contracts inwards, • the camera turns off... I did notice the superficial disfigurement that is on the outer shell of the lens, but this shouldn't cause this error as on occasions, the camera turns on, the lens extends outwards, and I can snap a few pictures, unless I aim the camera in any direction other than straight ahead - if not straight ahead, the lens contracts inwards & camera turns off. 12/10/2015 by Frae Guile Add a comment 0/1024 Cancel Post comment Are you sure you want to delete this zzzzzz? Share March 13, 2016 A lens error message on a Nikon Coolpix S220 can unfortunately be fairly common. This kind of error message is sometimes accompanied by a beeping sound as the lens attempts to come out or retract, or in some cases the lens might fail to move or the camera shuts down completely. This problem, however, is not unique to Nikon Coolpix S220 cameras only, but rather is a pretty common problem in other digital cameras as well. Causes of Lens Error Messages There are several problems that can trigger an error lens message in a Nikon Coolpix S220. These include: The camera is dropped with its lens extended The camera's battery gets drained with the lens extended Presence of dirt particles such as sand or grit somewhere along the lens' extension mechanism Dirt accumulation at the bottom of the camera case Luckily for Nikon Coolpix owners, it not hard to rectify a lens error message. Most of the fixes are quite easy, though others are a little bit more extensive and can void the warranty on the Coolpix. In such cases, it's better to perform the more extensive procedures on cameras whose warranty period has expired, while bearing in mind that this warranty does not extend to problems caused by dirt or damage from impact. How to Fix the Error Message the Easy Way The following methods are good places to begin when fixing the camera. If the problem has been caused by flat batteries, remove the batteries then wait for a few minutes. Now put a fresh set of NiMH 2500mah batteries then turn the camera on. If this fails to work, press and hold the ''OK'' or ''Function'' buttons while powering the camera on. Alternatively, remove the batteries and the memory card together. Wait for a few minutes then put in a fresh set of batteries and replace the memory card, then power on the device. If the problem is being caused by dirt particles lodged around the lens mechanism, blow compressed air around the gaps in the lens barrel. Use a hair drier for this purpose, but take care to use the ''No Heat'' setting. Another alternative to th
