front yard and when I turned it on, the lens made a clicking sound when it extended. I tried to zoom and it made the clicking sound again. Then the screen went dark and I got the "lens error, restart camera" error message. It turned itself off with the lens still extended. I have tried to restart several time and the error message just comes on and canon powershot a4000 lens error it turns itself back off again. I tried taking the battery out for a while but same result.Best Buy only allows you to return a camera within 14 days and this has been 18. I am going to try anyway but do not have much hope. I went to the Canon website and found absolutely no information about this error message or any help other than how to send it in for service. We are about to leave on a trip, which is why I bought this new camera in the first place, and do not want to wait 3 weeks for repair. Has anyone else had this problem and figured out how to fix it themself? Thanks. About a week ago, I went on a trip, took pictures the whole trip, everything was ok. When I got home, and tried to turn the camera to move the pictures to my PC, I got an error: "Lens error, restart camera" The lens doesn't even start to open, doesn't make any sounds of trying even. If you don't have a card reader in your computer(s), they are available inexpensively, for example: amazon.com/Mini-Memory-Card-Reader-Writer/dp/B000FNDWLQ/… –coneslayer May 6 '11 at 13:54 2 I got this issue with my camera too, when my son dropped it in the sand. The lens mechanism retraction is very fragile. One grain of sand is enough to break the camera. In our case, we got the camera for less than a week, so we returned the camera for an exchange. –decasteljau May 6 '11 at 14:01 add a comment| 9 Answers 9 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. I have written a blog post about some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 50% of lens errors, but they're worth a try. share|improve this answer edited Oct 6 '11 at 4:54 Imre 25.7k783149 answered Oct 6 '11 at 3:54 Camera Repair 541 2 Welcome to Photo.SE! Your blog post seems to have
the card back in, and turned it back on to hear the beeps and read the error18 message. i can see that the lense isn't fully seated. The shutter is not closed obvioucly either. I tried all of the T.S. steps listed to no avail. Was considering purchasing a Canon SLR but after reading of Canon's failure to responde to this am having second guesses. EmailPosted October 30, 2011 11:27 amRoyCamSince my earlier post this morning, I tried gently applying pressure on the lens and wiggled it (it was stuck out) as I turned the camera back off, and was able to get it to retract. Now it is working fine after several times (knock on wood!). I could hear the camera clicking a few times, then the quick beeping, then the E18 error. I am glad I found this web site with repair instructions - I don't want to wait for Canon to repair it.
