be appreciated, and karma will prevail! This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera, a stuck lens, jammed lens, or a malfunctioning lens. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canon Powershot), "ACCESS" error (Sony Cybershot), "Zoom nikon coolpix l840 lens error Error" (Fuji Finepix), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak Easyshare), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (Nikon Coolpix and some other camera makers lately are using this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move. The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intrerior

- Nikon COOLPIX L18 Digital Camera Answers : Sometimes removing the batteries for a day may correct the problem temporarily. But the real problem is really in the lens mechanism. "Lens error"can only be repaired by Nikon or an authorized repairman. I http://www.lionebra.com/nikon_coolpix_l18_digital_camera/q669662-lens_error_nikon_coolpix sent mine back in Dec. 2007. It was repaired free of free of charge under the warranty. It was fixed and returned very fast. The same problem just reoccurred and I sent it back to Nikon this very morning. They told me http://www.ehow.com/how_8446977_fix-lens-nikon-coolpix-l3.html this is not a problem with this model, but I beg to differ. My internet search revealed that this apparently is a problem with many Nikon lens mechanisms. Cameras How to Fix a Stuck Out Lens on a Nikon Coolpix L3 How to Fix a Stuck Out Lens on a Nikon Coolpix L3 By Mark Spowart eHow Contributor Mark Spowart Follow Pin Share Tweet Share Email Save Comstock/Comstock/Getty Images The Coolpix L3 was released by Nikon in 2006. The compact point and shoot digital camera is built around a 5.0 megapixel CCD (Charge Coupled Device) sensor and has 3.1x optical zoom lens. The zoom lens is controlled by the small rocker switch on the back of the camera, and at times the lens can become stuck in its fully extended position. When this happens there are few things you can to at home to try and retract it. Contact Nikon and confirm the warranty on the camera has expired and that there is no recalls for the problem you are experiencing. If there is a recall or warranty on the camera, then take it to a local Nikon dealer and have the problem fixed for free by a trained technician. Otherwise proceed to the next step. Inspect the lens looking closely with a magnifying glass between the lens barrels. Look for any small grains of sand or dirt that may be lodged in between the two lens sections. The smallest amount of sand or dirt can prevent the lens from retracting. Use small pin to remove any dirt or sand between the lens sections if any is visible. Remove and replace the batteries, particularly if they are old or low on charge. The motor that retracts the lens requires power from the battery to operate. If the batteries are low they may not have enough power to operate the motor. Replace the batteries, press and hold the power switch to turn the camera off, as you are doing this, gently push on the front of the lens to see if it starts to retract. If you feel start to move remove all pressure from the front of the lens. If the lens retracts, allow it to retract fully and for the camera to power off. When the camera is off, turn it on again, and try to extend the lens. If it works normally then the problem is fixed. If this does not work, consult with a Nikon technician. References DP Revi
