Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism, that's all she wrote. I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. Note that this problem applies to ALL cameras with telescopic lens barrel (optical) zoom. I Dropped My Camera And The Lens Is Stuck
