This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital nikon coolpix l840 lens error camera, a stuck lens, jammed lens, or a malfunctioning lens. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canon Powershot), "ACCESS" error (Sony Cybershot), "Zoom Error" (Fuji Finepix), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak Easyshare), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (Nikon Coolpix and some other camera makers lately are using this variation). cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move. The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism, that's all she wrote. I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. Note that this problem applies to ALL cameras with telescopic lens barrel (optical) zoom. With Samsung's release of the Galaxy S4 Zoom, I'm really curious to see

Sep 23, 2013 I recently had the message come up saying "Lens Error. Contact a Nikon-authorized service center". I have read online and https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/52213060 realize now that this is not an uncommon error. It sucks since I have never dropped it or anything. Anyway the camera is useless with this error coming up and I am not sure what my best bet is to get it fixed. I https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/215376/How+do+I+fix+the+lens+cap+error bought the camera about a year ago from a retailer as an open box display model. I paid cash and no longer have a receipt. When I go to Nikon online it appears that proof of purchase is required to register and get lens error service based on that registration. Does anybody have any experience with Nikon that makes them feel otherwise? I took it to a local repair shop and the guy said he thought it was an issue with the camera. Specifically he thought it was with the contacts where the lens connected with the camera. I feel like he is full of it and that there is something that came loose in the lens. If I strike out with Nikon I am thinking about taking the lens apart. When nikon lens error I rotate the lens with the camera on it zooms properly and then it gets to a point and "shifts" which is when the message comes up. Any thoughts on opening up the lens to try to fix this myself? Thanks for any advice. I enjoyed using the camera and was learning more about how to use it but am bummed about it breaking so easily. Another way could be to forcibly blow out any obstructions around the lens barrel. 2) Turn the power off remove batteries and wait one minute then replace the batteries with a brand new set, once this is complete turn the camera back on while holding the functions button (the ok button). Should that not work turn camera back off and remove memory card and repeat the process. 3) Plug in the AV (audio/video) cable, the reason so is because this will provide more power for the camera lens to extend and refocus 4) Placing the camera on
