Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens, the problem should be easy to fix. This type of a problem usually occurs if the camera was dropped while the lens was extended. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a “click” as it pops back into place. Try powering the camera back on. i've found it on the net, here is the original text - if that won't help - go to the

If you don't have a card reader in your computer(s), they are available inexpensively, for example: amazon.com/Mini-Memory-Card-Reader-Writer/dp/B000FNDWLQ/… –coneslayer May 6 '11 at 13:54 2 I got this issue with my camera too, when my son dropped it in the sand. The lens mechanism retraction is very fragile. One grain of sand is enough to break the camera. In our case, we got the camera for less than a week, so we returned the camera for an exchange. –decasteljau May 6 '11 at 14:01 add a comment| 9 Answers 9 active oldest votes up vote 3 down vote accepted Lens errors are fairly common. I bought a used PowerShot A540 digital camera for one of my projects. It had common problem with lens cover, which didn't open fully without help. With google I found plenty tips how to do this, but no clear step by step instructions with pictures. I could imagine that the lens cover mechanism is similar in A5** series at least… Lens cover does not open fully Usually something sticky dirt caused this, simple cleaning will help. The real problem is how to open the lens cover. To fix the problem I needed: - alcohol (Finlandia vodka in my case…) - cotton bud - dust blower - plastic tweezers (metal ones could scratch the lens) - tooth pick needed equipment 1. First I powered on the camera in capture mode. 2. Then immediately opened battery compartment and removed the batteries to leave lens out. 3. Next I applied the alcohol carefully around the silver end cover retainer edge of the lens with the cotton bud. I tried not to soak whole camera by using only tiny amounts of the booze. alcohol applied along the retainer ring The alcohol will dissolve the glue holding the retainer ring. It took few minutes the glue to dissolve. I had to repeat the alcohol treatment once or twice. I used my nails to try when the ring is loose enough. 4. I removed the retainer ring using finger nails. Retainer ring has also plastic claws to hold it still. In my case they didn't break when I pulled the ring out… Retainer ring removed At this point all the parts of the cover mechanism fell out, I almost lost one… In the mechanism is 2 tiny springs (they didnt fall out) and 4 plastic leaves. 5. I removed the plastic parts (The springs I left in place) and cleaned them with ultrasonic cleaner. I could've used the other cotton bud and lightly soaped water. Lens cover parts drying 6. Now it was good time to clear the lense using dust blower and microfiber cloth. 7. Next I noticed that re-assembly was easier when lens retracted to "off-mode". So I put batteries back and switched the camera off. 8. After couple of try outs I figured out how the parts should be assembled: 9. Next step was to use tooth pick to bend the springs in a position where they push smaller leaves against the large ones making them close tightly. cover mechanism assembled 10. Finally I snapped the retainer ring back o
