Help! The https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/1006827 error is basically that when I power up the camera, everything works fine, I can take pictures, video, but when I turn it off, the power light goes off but the lens remains unretracted and exposed. In order to fix that, I have to turn the lens error camera back on, which it doesn't like, since it makes grinding noises (scary, scary grinding noises) that sound kind of like a camera stutter. If I look on the display, I see "E18" and that's it. Eventually the lens does go back in but I don't like to keep doing that for fear of damaging the camera. canon lens error I looked on Canon's website and 'E18' is the error for when there is a lens problem, which I could have guessed, but the only solution they offer is to take it to a professional shop. Currently, I'm in Europe, and not only am I unsure where to find such a shop, the language barrier would be an impediment. Is there any hope of trying to fix this myself? I don't want to monkey around and make things worse. Is there a chance that it will clear up over time? I appreciate any help, thanks! posted by amicamentis to Technology (6 answers total) Unless you're a watchmaker, you probably can't do anything but make it worse. There are Canon service centers all over the place, and my experience is that they are fairly quick and reasonably cheap. There should be a list of them on the Website. (And my English email to Canon in Japan was answered in English - there may not be a language problem.) If

The E18 error as I understand it is when the lens fails to retract, and that can be caused by dirt or water getting into the lens mechanism. I would suspect it could also be caused by jarring the camera, such as would happen if you dropped it.I don't know of any way to repair the camera if you get the E18 error, other than return it to Canon for service. I have now owned a total of five Canon cameras and have never (yet) had an E18 error.Sandy-- hide signature -- God gave us an incredible world.
