I took the battery's out including the small nikon coolpix lens stuck date battery, replaced and that has seemed to correct the error. I also low formatted the SD card because there had been an error on a file at one stage. -- SteveT SteveRT's gear list:SteveRT's gear list Canon PowerShot S2 IS Canon PowerShot SX1 IS Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Sony SLT-A77 Sony 70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM +2 more Reply Reply with quote Complain HenryUK • Regular Member • Posts: 334 Re: Lens Error- please restart Camera S3 IS In reply to COLC • Oct 27, 2011 I had an S2 IS that did the same thing. The micro ultrasonic motor (USM) that operates the lens extension/retraction and zooming mechanism wears out and won't drive properly.Other causes can be sand in the gears or physical damage. It is usually hopelessly uneconomic to get Canon to do a repair. You might as well buy a secondhand one.I have seen micro USM and complete optical units on eBay. It's possible to replace them yourself if you are mechanically dextrous and have the right tools. Try forcing the camera lens but be careful while doing this if something goes wrong your camera our lens can be damage. Turn off the camera. Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. If you notice that the gap is not even all the way around the lens. Simply - VERY GENTLY - press down the lens on the side where the gap is the biggest. You should hear a "click" as it pops back into place. Try powering the camera back on. If the lens doesn't extend at all or it extends, and then retracts again, do the following. Turn the camera off. Your help in sharing will be appreciated, and karma will prevail! This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera, a stuck lens, jammed lens, or a malfunctioning lens. Some common error messages that might show up on lens error the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canon Powershot), "ACCESS" error (Sony Cybershot), "Zoom Error" (Fuji Finepix), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak Easyshare), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (Nikon Coolpix and some other camera makers lately are using this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't nikon coolpix lens even move. The problem is actually quite common throughout all camera brands. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended. Believe it or not, one BIG contributor to lens errors is using a camera case. Sand, gunk, case fibers, etc... accumulate at the bottom of the case. These materials love to cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case (especially those cases with soft fibrous intreriors). Once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism, that's all she wrote. I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. Note that this problem applies to ALL cameras with telescopic lens barrel (optical) zoom. With Samsung's release of the Galaxy S4 Zoom, I'm really curious to see if this will also be a issue/problem with this camera phone (and other phones with optical zoom). I predict (on June 16, 2013) that it will, as most people carry their phones in pockets and purses. If it occurs, Fix 5a would likely be the best technique to correct this problem.
