The buildup freezes up the ability of the lens to open. Although the use of the E18 error coding made this problem seem to be the particular domain of Canon cameras, the problem is actually quite common throughout all cameras with telescopic lens barrels. As a result, Canon has since dropped the use of this error code in its newer cameras. In its place it has adopted the more common term "lens error" that other manufacturers use. As such, its newer

General jarring of the camera "General camera malfunction" One major contributor to E18 lens errors is the improper use of camera cases, or the carrying of cameras in pockets. An inadvertent activation of the camera while in the case or pocket may cause the lens to extend with the lens restricted in its movement, causing the error. Another cause is that sand, dust, and dirt will accumulate in the bottom of the case if it is not cleaned regularly (and lint for pockets). These materials readily cling to the camera by electrostatic build-up from the camera rubbing against the side of the case, especially for those cases with soft fibrous interiors. The lens error will occur once these materials work their way into the lens mechanism. Another major contributor is sand in general. Extra care should be utilized when taking a camera to the beach. error? - Canon PowerShot SD300 / IXUS 40 Digital Camera Answers : HelloThe problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you http://www.lionebra.com/canon_powershot_sd300_ixus_40_digital_camera/q3823772-fix_e18_error could try, but the \012probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.Use\012\012\012\012\012\012\012 these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.Firstly ,\012 try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.Try holding the \012shutter button while switching on the camera.Look at the lens , \012and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then \012try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).Try gently \012pushing lens error or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may \012cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.Another\012 way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and \012then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to\012 not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and \012down a canon lens error few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the \012camera is enough to get things going again.Try hitting your \012camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of \012your hand.Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair centre for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to \012replace the camera. If it is still under warranty I would suggest\012 you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any \012off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about\012 warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories. You can also have a look at THIS link.Hope\012 \012the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need \012any further assistance. Also, please be so kind to let me know if you \012found this helpful.RegardsAndrea Repair Help & Product Troubleshooting for Canon PowerShot SD300 / IXUS 40 Digital Camera Please enable JavaScript to view the comments powered by Disqus.
