This discussion is locked s01705661 Level 1 (0 points) Q: Error Code -1309 when copying large file I'm trying to back up a large (about 5.5GB) video (.mkv) file on to my external hard drive. It copies completely but once it is finished I get a message saying "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (Error Code -1309)"I've searched for Error Code -1309 which always leads to Error Code -36, which sounds like a similar error but none of those solutions have solved the problem. The video works when run from the internal hard disk, so the file isn't corrupted.I can't cut the video into smaller pieces because I don't have video editing software that runs .mkvI have a MacBook (Late 2006) MA699xx/A with Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Cheers, MA699 (Late 2006), Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger Posted on Mar 31, 2010 8:26 AM I have this question too Close Q: Error Code -1309 when copying large file All replies Helpful answers by Limnos, Limnos Mar 31, 2010 9:05 AM in response to s01705661 Level 9 (54,611 points) Mac OS X Mar 31, 2010 9:05 AM in response to s01705661 Hard drive connection? I try to transfer a .mov I created but, it quits half way giving me the Error code 1309. I've looked at other threads where people have had similar problems. It seems that the drive has to be formatted for Mac to transfer a file as big as mine (13.89GB). That's not going to work, unless WinXP can also read/copy from that kind of drive. Is it possible to get that file onto the drive without reformatting to a Mac file system? The drive is formatted as FAT-32. (I don't know why Mac won't write to NTFS. That is very annoying having to delete my partitions and reformat for a simple file transfer!) It's plugged into the USB 2.0 port on the front of the box. FireWire isn't an option with this drive. Any suggestions? Remember, I have to have WinXP compatibility. #1 msbae, May 25, 2006 bobw uix_expand uix_collapse The Late: SuperMacMod Joined: Mar 29, 2001 Messages:

We're all used to seeing error messages like: The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -1309). Thanks. That's helpful. The message tells us nothing, but it turns out that it's pretty easy to learn more from the error number. All you have to do is type one line into Terminal. Open Terminal (in Applications > Utilities) and type themacerrorcommand followed by the error number: macerror -1309 Themacerrorcommand for error -1309 returns: Mac OS error -1309 (fileBoundsErr): file's EOF, offset, mark or size is too big This gives us a hint that the file we're trying to work with is actually too big for the filesystem to handle (a very big file indeed considering that the old Mac HFS filesystem had a file size limit of 2 gigabytes, FAT32 is limited to 4GB and Mac HFS+ is limited to 8exabytes- so big as to be practically unlimited).
