I am trying to import an excel file into access as a table. I successfully imported the first file but the second file gives me an error that says "An error occurred trying to import file ____. The file was not imported." What are the possible reasons this http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_access-mso_other/importexport-specification-error-when-importing/9691d2ce-230e-455c-87ec-112b418c15cd error has occurred? Both excel files I am importing are in the same format, so I am confused as to why one worked but the other did not. Thanks for any help. 07-10-2005, 04:36 AM #2 statsman Newly Registered User Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Toronto ON Posts: 2,057 Thanks: 0 Thanked 3 Times in 3 Posts Do you have a calculated value in your http://www.access-programmers.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=89672 Excel table? Access doesn't like to import Excel tables with calculated values. It prefers to do the calculations itself. The odd thing is sometimes it will accept it, somtimes it won't. Make a copy of your Excel table and remove the calculated values. Import the table to Access. Then use a query to create your calculated values. Hope this helps. statsman View Public Profile Find More Posts by statsman 07-10-2005, 11:55 PM #3 gpurger Registered User Join Date: Apr 2004 Posts: 66 Thanks: 0 Thanked 0 Times in 0 Posts Hi, When Excel is inported access sets the columns data type to what is in the first row of the column. If the data type changes then it will cause your error and create the error tables. Tips Do not have an empty first row. Have only 1 row as headings. Do not use merged cells. I find that these are very good rules to apply. As you advance onto VBA you find ways around these problems. Hope this helps Gordon gpurger View Public Profile Find More Posts by gpurger « Previous Thread | Next Thread » Thread Tools Show Printable Version Email this Page Mark this thread as un

Problems importing Excel into Access P: n/a maztoo Hi I've seen this problem posted on this group in the past but I am yet to find a solution to the problem. I'm trying to import a simple spreadsheet into Access but am getting a message saying 'An error occurred trying to import the file C:\blah\blah.xls. The file was not imported'. I try and import the file by going to the file menu in Access - Get External Data - Import... I've checked for validation errors but can't see any obvious problems. I have formatted the spreadsheet before trying to import it so that numeric cells are formatted as numbers, made sure there are no blank cells, copied the data into a new worksheet, made sure there are no unusual field headings. 80% of the time I can import into Access with no problem but I can't see any reason for this not to work. No error file is created so it's very hard to understand why there is a problem. Any advice would be very gratefully received. I am running Access 2002 and Excel 2002 on a networked XP desktop. Feb 20 '06 #1 Post Reply Share this Question 1 Reply P: n/a Bill (The Original) It's ugly, it's stupid, but it might work. Highlight the spreadsheet and copy it. Open a new table in Access in datasheet view. Highlight the datasheet and paste in the sheet. If it works, look at your data for weirdness. If it does not work, move on to the next advice message.
