In this case there is a small complication in that the error is from a subform that is not linked to the main form. Below is the code from my latest attempt in a test database: Code from the Main Form: Option Compare Database Dim AskClose As Boolean Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer) AskClose = False End Sub Private Sub Form_Error(DataErr As Integer, Response As Integer) MsgStr = "Main Form:: Error: " & DataErr 'MsgBox MsgStr Debug.Print MsgStr Response = acDataErrContinue AskClose = True End Sub Private Sub Form_Unload(Cancel As Integer) Dim Ans As Integer MsgStr = "Main Form:: Unload" 'MsgBox MsgStr Debug.Print MsgStr If AskClose Then Ans = MsgBox("There has been an error! Are you sure you want to close?", vbYesNo) If Ans = vbNo Then MsgStr = "Main Form:: Unload:Cancel = true" 'MsgBox MsgStr Debug.Print MsgStr Cancel = True End If End If End Sub Code from the Sub Form:- Option Compare Database Dim MsgStr As String Dim StopUndo As Integer Private Sub Form_Open(Cancel As Integer) StopUndo = 0 End Sub Private Sub Form_Error(DataErr As Integer, Response As Integer) MsgStr = "Sub Form:: Error: DataErr " & DataErr If StopUndo = 0 Then MsgBox MsgStr End If Debug.Print MsgStr Response = acDataErrContinue StopUndo = 2 End Sub Private Sub Form_Undo(Cancel As Integer) MsgStr = "Sub Form:: Undo" 'MsgBo

Solved Error handling when closing a form - Microsoft Access 2007 Posted on 2011-01-05 MS Access Query Syntax ms access 2 Verified Solutions 12 Comments 682 Views Last Modified: 2012-05-10 Hello: I have a form in Access that allows the user to add records into a table. If the user clicks on the > arrow in the record selector by accident and doesn't want to add another record they get 2 error messages. The first error message says "you must enter a value in the ms access error (primary key) field". If you click OK then the second message says "you can't save the record at this time .....do you want to close the database object anyway?". I wanted to capture the 2nd error message and just close the form. So I put the following code in the On Error event of the form: Private Sub Form_Error(DataErr As Integer, Response As Integer) If DataErr = 2169 Then If MsgBox("Do you want to close without saving the record?", vbQuestion + vbYesNo + vbDefaultButton2) = vbYes Then DoCmd.Close acForm, "FrmFinding", acSaveNo End If Else End If End Sub Now when I try this I get the 1st error message about entering a value in the (primary key) field. Then I get the custom message above that says "Do you want to close without saving the record?" If I click yes I get a run time error 2501 that says The close action was cancelled. And I am still getting the error message that says you can't save this record at this time.... I must be doing something wrong. Please help. Thank you 0 Questi

Access automatically saves any changed data on tables P: n/a Christopher Koh how do you stop Access from saving any changed data in your tables and queries? like i just add or change data on the table/query tables, then click on X (exit)because i have no intention of saving it but access still automatically saves it even if I did not press the save command on the menu/toolbar? What is the solution for this? help thanks! Nov 13 '05 #1 Post Reply Share this Question 3 Replies P: n/a Wayne Morgan The Save command on the toolbar is to save structural changes to objects in your database, not for saving data. There is another command that will save a record on demand. The behaviour you mention is by design. Access will save any changes when you leave the current record, whether that be to go to another record or by closing the form, query, or table. In a form, you can do something to abort this behaviour. In the Form's BeforeUpdate event, you can prompt to save changes and give the use the option to cancel. However, this will happen for every record change. Example: If MsgBox("Save Change?", vbYesNo+vbQuestion)=vbNo Then Cancel = True Me.Undo End If Also, in the Form's Error event you will need the following: If DataErr = 2169 Then Response = acDataErrContinue -- Wayne Morgan MS Access MVP "Christopher Koh"
