I contacted panny customer care and got this response: ISSUE RESOLUTION: Dear Mr Kyle, Thank you for your email enquiry. Following a change made to the Digital Terrestrial Broadcast (Freeview) we have become aware that some difficulties have arisen for owners of the certain models. Please note that the broadcast change ONLY affects transmitters in Scotland. All current models in the range are not affected. During use of the product you will be prompted by an on screen message that "new services are available’. When confirming that you wish to update, these models will perform a re-scan. During this process the product will lock up "freeze", and the U80 error message is displayed. If thisDVD recorders. Three Panasonic DMR-EX77 recorders and three of these EX83 devices. The first three I bought six years ago and they ALL failed with the common U80 & U81 errors. That is to https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/cr/rR313SQ7CK71Z0M say, they'd stop working and either the U80 or U81 error code appeared in http://www.fixed4free.com/answers.php?id=166778 the display. These errors make the machine switch off and slowly reset. Then you get a message telling you that the recording was damaged. I returned two of these and held on to the third because there are almost no other machines out there that will do what the Panasonic will do. I was panasonic dmr truly stuck between a rock and a hard place. I put up with the frequent fails because when it did work it worked very well. Then after this last EX77 started to really break down I bought the bigger and more expensive EX83. Amazon delivered it and it failed immediately with the same U80 error. Amazon replaced it and the second failed as well! Straight out of the box it panasonic error message failed with another U80! So with a bit of cajoling Amazon sent me a third. This failed immediately too! Right away it showed exactly the same fault as all the previous units! So now I'm jumping through the hoops trying to return this third unit to Amazon via rude couriers (City Link) or ones that don't turn up (Yodel).Amazon have been excellent all the way through trying to expedite matters but I'm really tired of all the hassle. So I wrote to the Chief Executive Officer of Panasonic (Keith Evans) to ask why the machines have this common fault and one that has gone unchecked for over 6 years. A fault that has been built into successive models!I got a reply that identified that U80 and U81 were microchip faults but that denied that there was a problem. But if you Google 'Panasonic U80 error' there are reports all over the place! OK, there may me some machines out there that do work properly but so many don't that you've got to ask yourself seriously whether you want to take the gamble. There are even unofficial Panasonic U81 repair kits available on eBay! But if you're not an electronics expert this won't be very reassuring. Besides,
