Clicking on the "Tell Me More" button, landed me @ http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3526?viewlocale=en_US As I am trying to play AVI files, I chose to try Telestream's "Flip4Mac" or Divx's Divx for Mac. Other web site's suggests to try http://perian.org/. Tried Flip4Mac, but no joy. Next tried Divx's.  Worked well showing the video, but unable to hear Audio; as this message came up: You may need an additional audio decoder to play the soundtrack of this file. This file contains a track in the Dolby AC3 Audio (code "8192") format. An earlier Googling had brought me this joy: Watching AVI Movies in Mac OS http://guides.macrumors.com/Watch_AVI_Movies_in_Mac_OS_X liba52 - a free ATSC A/52 stream decoder http://liba52.sourceforge.net/ QT AC3 Codec http://sourceforge.net/projects/qtac3codec/ To install the codec, follow the guideline available @ http://www.ehow.com/how_6405752_install-quicktime-codec-mac.html Open Finder Navigate to "Macintosh HD" \ Library \ QuickTime Copy the downloaded component "AC3 Codec.component" from your Downloads folder Restart the computer You might have to authenticate. If so, just provide your username and password. Once I followed the steps, I tried again to play and see if I could the the Audio. But, still no joy. And, all I really could mutter is what an opaque system.  It seems QuickTime does not ‘ve a built in Interface for reviewing which codecs are "in-play". So hear we go … restarted the system; to ensure that the codecs has the best chance of being used. Hopefully, on the other side, audio will show up .. or better said &

I've ripped all my DVDs to mp4 using Handbrake and although most of them still work, QT returns the error "The document "..." could not be opened. A required codec isn't available." http://www.mac-forums.com/showthread.php?t=247223 on a few of them. After some investigation, the only difference I can find between the ones that work and the ones that don't is the codec mp4s. The file is still recognized as an MPEG-4 movie but I've never encountered (noticed, really) the -s attachment. I tried to find it in the MPEG specifications but no luck there. Has anyone encountered this and/or come up with a solution? I have Perian installed, no difference. And VLC plays the file fine so it's specifically with QT. The extension itself is actually .m4v and I've tried just changing it to .mp4 but the codec is still mp4s. I'm not sure how to change t
