"This is not a movie file" I have a few avi's that I can't open. I get the error message "This is not a movie file". I've updated everything I can think of, including Perian and various movie players, but still no luck. When I use VLC, it starts the movie but there is a message on the screen- something about "Play with Windows Media Player- missing codecs". But when I try to play it with WMP it doesn't work...Any suggestions?? Tibook G4,, Mac OS X (10.4.5) Posted on Sep 8, 2009 8:58 AM I have this question too Close Q: can't play avi? I tried to open another file and got the message that i need to install movieXplayer for it to work. Of course, they don't have a version for Mac and it's not free. Are there any work-arounds? If it is something truly proprietary with no Mac version then there may be no option. The other thing to try is opening the file with a web browser. Sometimes they have codecs for doing weird media.Edit:oops, crossed posts. Check VLC website. I recall reading supported formats for MacOS there recently and vaguely remember WMV3 was not one of the supported codecs. WMV is definitely one of those weird proprietary codecs.Message was edited by: Limnos Helpful (0) Reply options Link to this post by Julie Barron, Julie Barron Sep 8, 2009 9:08 AM in response to Limnos Level 3 (515 points) Sep 8, 2009 9:08 AM in response to Limnos Wow, great... According to MediaInfo Mac, the files use VC-1 for Video and WMA2 for Audio. One of the files actually uses WMV 3 for Video and WMV2 for Audio. So shouldn't they open with Windows Media Video? frustrated and looking everywhere for almost 10 hours straight I had accumulated enough imformation on all 2048 error occurances I could write a book. So since it seems no one has written an affermative answer. Ill post what worked after my research. 1st: I must thank all internet users out there because It wouldnt have worked if not for them. They gave me hope! To start: Rename all your files that quicktime cant read, to .wmv all occurances of the -2048 error come from https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2149020?tstart=0 codec misuse by the mis-naming of the 'quicktime' files. Then download any transcodal translator. I used VLC Player, which can do pretty much anything. VLC Site: > http://www.videolan.org/ Once downloaded youll find it can play your 'broken files'. Proceed to click on File >Streaming/Exporting WIzard... Go through: 'Transcode/Save to file' Then: Select either select streaming file from location: Or: https://www.moviecodec.com/solutions/quicktime-error-2048-fix-41979/ Select File from existing playlist. (Open(ed) files) Last: Select how you want it TRUELY encoded as anything from mpeg4 video and audio to DivX to H. 264 to Theora REMEMBER: select the transcode buttons. (Dont forget bitrate has an extreme importance the more bits the higher quality but it comes at a price as the video becomes larger. It wont be 100% quality, maybe 95% max; usually around 85 - 90% normal quality.) Next: select your encapsulation method you want this to match your codec so please match them, it causes less problems. Almost Done: Select a save location and wammo your done! Finally: Click FINISH and it shows you all your work one last time before you complete the transcode. The file may be damaged or may not be a movie file that is compatible with QuickTime Player. I used the same command on a set of images generated from an iSight time lapse, but in this case the above images are from a digital camera.
