I've had this before and restarting the computer has usually helped - but not this time. I've also tried reinstalling quicktime, as well as installing divx (i get an error message saying this file cannot be opened). for some reason i can't install VLC (some message about not being able to mount).I've also burnt the files to a cd and tried playing from there (Rather than my external hard drive) but still won't work. The files won't even open up a preview... i really don't understand what could have happened though - i've opened and played all of them when i first downloaded them and they worked just fine!i'd appreciate any help.cheers mac book, Mac OS X (10.4.1) Posted on Apr 19, 2009 8:14 AM I have this question too Close Q: quick time 'this is not a movie file' error message All replies Helpful answers by BDAqua, BDAqua Apr 19, 2009 10:16 AM in response to pomaus Level 10 (123,930 points) Apr 19, 2009 10:16 AM in response to pomaus Hi pomaus, and a warm welcome to the forums! It sounds like something is missing or corrupted.Try this first...Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when complete, test again. What state does that leave us in? Any changes at all? • PRINT • NEXT >> • General Error and Non-Playable Quicktime Files by Josh Aderhold on Mar 24, 2010 at 7:11:08 pm Hi, I recently finished a project, and after I was done, deleted all render files. Set the hard drive on a shelf and haven't looked at it for a month or so. Today, I opened the drive up because my client requested a clip from the event. I was touching up one of my sequences when I suddenly came to a clip that was https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1981343?tstart=0 all white. A few of them are like this. In my canvas and viewer, the clip is white and will not play (General Error) So go to the source I thought. Opened up my Capture Scratch, and whadya know, my quicktime files wont play. Half of them (There's about 30 hours of footage) will not open with quicktime. Quicktime tells me https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1207789 "The movie could not be opened: The file is not a movie file." The file sizes haven't changed. 120GB per clip or so. These were all captured from HDCAM tapes as Prores422 59.98. The project is complete, but I am supposed to deliver one last item. Not to mention I'd really like to have all my footage so I can go back to it whenever I need to. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. I've run into a similar problem in the past; unfortunately, sometimes the clips were just corrupted. Other times, however, when I've added the file type (.mov), it's solved the problem. --Did you media manage the files onto the drive? Just curious if you pushed them manually or let FCP do the work for you. Hope it's a simple fix. JoshReturn to posts indexReport Post&bul

The file may be damaged or may not be a movie file that is compatible with QuickTime Player. I used the same command on a set of images generated from an iSight time lapse, but in this case the above images are from a digital camera. The resolution is a lot higher, but I am scaling it to 640x480 and I don't see anything in the output that suggests a problem: Input #0, image2, from '*.JPG': Duration: 00:00:04.76, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg, yuvj422p(pc), 4928x3264, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc vs. the working movie: Input #0, image2, from '*.JPG': Duration: 00:01:23.72, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg, yuvj420p(pc), 640x480 [SAR 1:1 DAR 4:3], 25 fps, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc And for the output: Output #0, mp4, to 'movie.mp4': Metadata: encoder : Lavf55.19.104 Stream #0:0: Video: h264 (libx264) ([33][0][0][0] / 0x0021), yuvj422p, 640x480, q=-1--1, 12800 tbn, 25 tbc Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (mjpeg -> libx264) vs. for the working one: Output #0, mp4, to 'movie.mp4': Metadata: encoder : Lavf55.19.104 Stream #0:0: Video: h264 (libx264) ([33][0][0][0] / 0x0021), yuvj420p, 640x480 [SAR 1:1 DAR 4:3], q=-1--1, 12800 tbn, 25 tbc Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (mjpeg -> libx264) Aside from the working movie being longer and a lower source resolution, the only difference I can see is that there is an extra "[SAR 1:1 DAR 4:3]" mentioned in the video stream, but I have no
