Hello, I have this incurable problem (looks like a curse) with system restore. Whenever I try to restore any older restore points I have the restore operation ends miserably with the error message "system restore could not access a file" and the event viewer shows "An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. Additional information: 0x80070005" The restore fails in normal boot, http://www.sevenforums.com/backup-restore/48067-system-restore-error-0x80070005.html safe mode, and System repair environment "The one next to safe mode in the F8 window" I don't have Norton nor Zone Alarm nor roxio, I use ESET Smart Security 4 and I've used system restore numerous times while ESET is installed, plus if the problem was eset then why would it fail even in the system repair environment. I tried also resetting the security and registry permissions using this Aaron Stebner's WebLog : Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions. I'm out of ideas and in need of help. I also tried "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /r", also tried manually created and automatically created restore points. A side question, is there a log file for the restore operation? A log file that shows which files were restored and which had problems? If such a file exists it would be very helpful in diagnosing this strange problem. Thanks in advance. Windows 7 x64 Ultimate here. I also suggest you to make sure Windows has enabled automatic System Restore point creation on your operating system. Many times you apply registry manipulations or install third-party software, thus it becomes a matter an unspecified error of paramount importance that Windows should create automatic restore point at such instances. However, many times it may happen that your system couldn't restore itself to an earlier date. Recently, we came around such scenario while restoring a machine running Windows 8. The System Restore in this case failed and thrown following error: System Restore did not completed successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070005) As suggested by the error dialog, we temporarily disabled the antivirus program that we was using on the system, even uninstalling it didn't made any differences in the situation. If you see the technical side of System Restore, it basically depends upon Volume Shadow Copy service to carry on its operation, and this service is usually Manual type. So starting this service can fix this issue easily. Here is how: FIX : "System Restore Did Not Completed Successfully" In Windows 7, 8 1. Press + R and put services.msc in Run dialog box. Click OK to open Services. 2. Now in the Services wind

Advertisement b101 Thread Starter Joined: Jul 5, 2009 Messages: 47 Oddly each time I get the same information; System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's files and settings were not changed. Details: System restore could not access a file, this is probably because an antivirus program is running, (so I disabled it, ran system restore and got the same massage as this again). (cont.) An unspecified error occured during system restore. (0x80070005) You can try system restore again and choose a different restore point, if you continue to see this error you can try an advanced recovery method. I can't understand why it appears to not be working, I read this http://http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-25163-system-restore-does-not-work (I couldn't work this link so I'll paste it here; http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-25163-system-restore-does-not-work which may suggest that system restore not working may be due to a trojan? What should I do, is it reasonable to expect to be able to do a system restore? Is there any trusted anti trojan software? Should I consider an advanced recovery method, as suggested? Should I try Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool, as suggested? Thanks. b101, Mar 2, 2010 #1 Sponsor Snuffy1 Joined: Feb 27, 2010 Messages: 112 You might simple try this: and see 1. start --> type cmd (run as admin) wait for popup slmgr.vbs -xpr post back an tell me what it says.....I hope it says Version 6.1 (7600) Permanently Activated 2. If the expire date says Permanent you OK 3. you have to set a Restore point before you can use it.... It might be turned off. This will insure you have turned it on and it will work.... follow : Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Recovery Snu
