Click Start > Type: cmd in Search box > Open Command Prompt and type; sfc /scannow . Press Enter. if that doesn't do http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/system-restore-faiiling-to-restore anything, in Command type: chkdsk /r /f > press Enter...system will need to reboot to run it. If that doesn't do anything post your machine's make and model so we can look what repair options are available for your machine. Edit: I saw that too Mike but just thought we'd run through the easist steps first. Tony Reports: · Posted 3 years ago Top Jancux Posts: 7 This post has been reported. Jancux here Hi everybody My friends machine is a Dell Laptop M5030 with an AMD V140 (2.3GHZ) processor. We have already run a system disc check which was error free. We have also run SFC again error free We have turned off System Restore, deleted all the old restore points and enabled System Restore again. The problem is also there in Safe Mode. Reports: · Posted 3 years ago Top StringJunky Posts: 2454 This post has been reported. Reboot the computer and immediately hold down CTRL and F11 keys together until the recovery screen shows and see if there is a repair option....you do NOT want to restore to factory settings....you will lose everything that way. Choose the Repair option if one is there. If no option is there the you will need a W7 disk to do an in-place upgrade which will replace all the system files but leave your set

Here's what happens: I pick a restore point and all looks well until it's re-booted and then I get the following error message: "System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source: %Systemroot%\registration Destination: ComplusStaging" I've tried deleting all restore points, running from a normal Windows sign in as well as "Safe" mode and using the F8 key (tapping during boot) and running it from the new "repair" facility. It will create a restore point but this problem happens when you try to use the restore point. It's been suggested from HP tech-support (questionable answers) that this computer has this problem because the version of Windows was from an upgrade for Windows 7 not an original install yet I bought this computer refurbished from ECOST as advertised with Windows 7 O.S. If I thought it had a previous O.S. of course I wouldn't have bought it. Any suggestions? Thanks! jnulr Reply With Quote 4th May 2010,09:50 #2 HappyAndyK Site Administrator Join Date Jun 2008 Posts 7,095 Please try this and see if it helps: Disable AntiVirus and Firewall temporarily. Type Services in Start Menu Search Box, hit Enter. Make sure that the Volume Shadow Copy Service is Running and set on Automatic. If the Status of System Restore Service is not Started, Start it. Also set it on Automatic if it is not. A reboot may be required. Reconfirm. Run System File checker ie Run sfc /scannow. Reboot when asked. Now try ... The Windows Club |
