I have figured out how to fix this and since it has been appearing on forums i thought it would be a good idea to put a fix for it here. If you have this problem with system restore coming up with this message: There was an unexpected error The file name, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect (0x8007007B) System restore will now close Don't panic, check system restore not on your computer if you have two hard drives (partitioned into 2) one default named as Partition 1 and the other should be named as Recovery. Go to start click on Computer then click system properties along the toolbar. Then go to system protection and look under the heading system restore points, uncheck the Recovery drive and check partition one (the hard drive which your OS is stored on) Then system restore will work properly and all you have to do is create your restore point from the same screen. I couldn't find any other fixes on the internet so i hope this comes in useful, Regards Alastair Feb 22, 2007 #1 raybay TS Evangelist Posts: 7,241 +9 Is this with an OEM disc and install, or a branded computer which has VISTA installed on a hidden partition, with recovery disc(s) supplied? For Windows XP: Click Start > Control Panel Click System Go to System Restore tab Windows XP System Restore tab Make sure the Turn off System Restore on all drives is unchecked For Windows Vista: Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools Click System Restore Click System Protection From Available Disks, make sure all disks are checked. Whenever you check a drive checkbox, System Restore will be enabled for that disk. For Windows 7: Click Start > Control Panel Click System Choose System Protection and then go to the System Protection tab Select which drive you want to check if System Restore is enabled (turned on or off) and click Configure Make sure the Restore system settings and previous versions of files option is checked For Windows 8: Search for system restore in the search bar Click Create a restore point Go to System Protection Select which drive you want to check and click Configure Make sure the Turn on system protection option is checked in order for System Restore to be turned on Fix #2: Check HDD space If your computer no longer has the free space, System Restore - even if it's turned on - will stop creating restore points.
