This

was first noticed when running a login script that add's printers didn't actually add any printers. To fix this kb2701894 problem, you need to delete references to the printer drivers in the registry. I had already deleted any references to any network printers in an earlier attempt to fix the problem, so https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2748246 I wil;l include that as a step as it will not affect any functionality. Open Registry Editor, making sure that you have administrator rights. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Architecture\Drivers\Version-3 Delete any subkeys for printer drivers that have been installed. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers Delete any subkeys that reference any network printers. Close Registry Editor Restart the Print Spooler services After this had been completed, all of the shared printers http://www.craig-tolley.co.uk/2010/07/01/specified-port-is-unknown-error-when-adding-network-printers/ as part of the login script connected and functioned as they should. All I can imagine is that one of the drivers was corrupt, or information had not been removed from the registry when a printer was removed. 28 people found this post useful. Mark this post as useful. I've set up a user group policy object that does the following: Delete all shared printersAdd each printer in turn, setting a single (dummy one) as a default This is via the Preferences > Control Panel Settings > Printers option. When users logon it appears to be entirely random whether or not they get those printers added. Checking event viewer on an affected logon, Group Policy Printers reports the following error: Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070704 The the specified port specified port is unknown.' This error was suppressed. If I then try and perform a 'manual' setup by typing the server hostname and printer share into Explorer I get the same error 'The specified port is unknown'. I thought I'd fixed it by changing the GPO settings to map printers using the server IP address but the issue is still occurring. I've also tried using a new, untouched profile with the same results. As I'm sure you'll all understand this is becoming more than a little frustrating now, especially when there's no apparent logic to it. Any thoughts on the next step of diagnosis? I've taken a brief look at the DNS servers thinking that might be the issue before I used IP addresses and run a dcdiag DNS test and all passed. I should also point out that the whole room received the same windows image and have the same driver versions installed. All help very gratefully received! Thanks Andrew Send PM 5th July 2011,09:27 PM #3 eddyc Join Date Aug 2008 Location Bristol Posts 534 Thank Post 123 Thanked 62 Times in 58 Posts Rep Power 30 We had this issue too, and it was something to do with the printer port. We deleted the printer off of the print server (which was a HP26
error which reads “The specified port is unknown” when you are doing the installation of a new hardware like printers. It will come up when the installer requests to connect the USB cable to the computer. It will make you quit the installation shortly after with the specified port is unknown error message. Here I took up HP printer and let us see how to come over this problem. The port will be a USB port and a quick check revealed that there was not a USB0001 port which usually is created when adding a USB printer to the computer system. The printer worked fine on another computer system running Windows Vista Home Premium which confirmed that the printer was working fine and the problem to be located on the first computer system running Windows XP. In order to fix this error, The first thing that had to be done was to uninstall all leftovers from the installation of the HP printer. This can be done with the HP Scrubber software which should be available on the installation CD. The uninstallation software can also be downloaded directly from the HP website. (It is located in the /ccc/ folder on the disk and can be started by clicking on uninstall.bat) All leftovers were removed after a reboot which ensured that the next installation would be a clean one. The problem hat to be connected to the USB Monitor. A quick look in the Windows Registry verified that assumption. Start the Windows Registry Editor with [Windows R], [regedit] and [enter]. Now navigate to the following Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Print/Monitors Check if a subkey with the name USB Monitor exists. If not create it by right-clicking Monitors and selecting New > Key. Name that key USB Monitor. Now right-click in the right pane and select New > String Value from the menu. Enter Driver as the name. Double-click driver and enter usbmon.dll as the value. Now restart your computer and perform the printer installation again. The installation should go through without problems now and the error message the specified port is unknown should not appear.
