installation of SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008 SP1. I must say that I'm personally proud to see our visual studio 2008 sp1 offline installer release of SQL Server 2008. I've been involved with the product team on this release since its early inception in December of 2004 so this moment does bring me great satisfaction. I've posted a

few entries already on features specific to SQL Sever 2008 that are important to CSS, one of them called Extended Events. I'll continue to regularly post more about the release over the coming months especially leading up to this year's PASS conference in Seattle in November (where CSS will once again come prepared to share our experiences and knowledge of internals). One of the jobs of CSS visual studio sp1 is to help customers with issues they encounter and our team is ready to help you when you contact us on SQL Server 2008. In that spirit, I want to make sure you know about a possible issue you might encounter today if you download SQL Sever 2008 and attempt to install it on a machine with Visual Studio 2008 already installed. If you have previously installed a CTP build of SQL Server 2008 you may also be affected by this problem so please read this carefully. If you have Visual Studio 2008 (any version prior to SP1) already installed, SQL Server 2008 installation will block you from installing if you pick any one of the following features: Business Intelligence Development Studio Integration Services Management Tools (Either Basic or Full) If you do not select one of these features, then you will not encounter the problem I'm about to describe. If you don't have Visual Studio 2008 already installed and have never installed a CTP build of SQL Server 2008, you should not have this problem. You may also encounter this problem if you have installed a CTP build of SQL Server 2008 prior to the SQL Server 2008 RTM in

Upgrade Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 to the SP1 before installing SQL Server 2008. This error is documented on KB https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/psssql/2008/08/11/sql-server-2008-visual-studio-2008-sp1-and-net-framework-3-5-sp1-explained/ 956139, "Actions that are required before you install SQL Server 2008 on a computer that has Visual Studio 2008 or the prerelease version of SQL Server 2008 installed". I had Visual Studio SP1 (version 9.0.30729.1 SP) properly installed on my machine, so why this message? Well, with a quick monitoring using Process Monitor I noticed https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/guil/2008/12/14/sql-server-2008-installation-dependency-problems-with-visual-studio-2008-sp1/ that the setup process was looking for ServicePack information on the WoW64 registry key, that was outdated: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\9.0\IDE\1033 In order to fix it, you can update the SP and SPIndex entries to 1 and the SPName to SP1; just like the registry key at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS\Servicing\9.0\BSLN\1033:" Tags sql2008 vs2008 workaround Comments (10) Cancel reply Name * Email * Website Pablo says: March 7, 2009 at 1:52 am Great !!! But actually I have VSTS 2008 SP1 installed. Any ideas what is wrong? Here is my screen snapshot. http://i41.tinypic.com/9teo7m.jpg thanks in advance, George sql-server visual-studio-2008 sql-server-2008 installation share|improve this question edited Jul visual studio 2008 29 '09 at 20:39 Scott Marlowe 3,68183447 asked May 10 '09 at 8:38 George2 15k85268422 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 4 down vote accepted Here's the KB article for that error. Here's another interesting article. If you have multiple Visual Studio products installed, you must upgrade all of them to SP1. If you have Visual Studio 2008 and one or more 2008 Express Editions, you cannot upgrade the Express Editions until you have upgraded Visual Studio. If you have not installed Visual Studio 2008 RTM but have this problem it is because Visual Studio 2008 Shell (integrated mode) is installed on your system but not at the SP1 level. This is probably because it was left over from a SQL Server 2008 CTP installation. Did you doublecheck if you have SP1 in the About box? The service pack should be in the list of "Installed products". share|improve this answer answered May 10 '09 at 8:42 Andomar 155k23226274 I am confused about "Visual Studio 2008 Shell (integrated mode)", it is a required component or not during our development? a clean Win7 RC box with VS 2008 SP1 installed and a working SQL 2008 Express “Data Base Engine” (installed via the Web Platform Installer). I discovered that SQL Management Studio Express was missing, and there began my long and frustrating journey to install Microsoft’s SQL management tools… I’m not sure why the tools were missing in the first place, but it turns-out that there is no simple way to install them. There is no separate installer for the tools as there was (so conveniently) for SQL Server 2005. [UPDATE: After fighting a long battle, I rediscovered an option in the new Web Platform Installer to add the SQL Management Tools to SQL Server 2008. A little late now to know if that would have worked, but hopefully you can give that a try before getting too far on your own painful SQL Server 2008 journey.] Enter the SQL Server 2008 installer. After countless attempts to “add” the tools to my existing install, I could never get the installer to provide me with the desired options. Not one to waste time “fighting software,” I uninstalled SQL Server 2008 and started fresh. To my dismay, the SQL Server 2008 Installer started throwing this install-blocking error at me when trying to re-install: Setup will not complete because the rule "Previous releases of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008" failed. This message further asserts that you must install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 before the installer will continue. But…like many others, I already installed SP1! So, I began looking for hacks around the installer. There are many options scattered across the web, but the tip that finally made things clear is this: The SQL Server 2008 installer is checking the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\XXX\Servicing\9.0\SP reg keys to tell if SP1 is installed. If you inspect those keys and find any SP keys with the value “0,” that is your road block. As it turns out, every installed version of Visual Studio 2008 must have SP1 installed for the SQL Server 2008 installer to work. This leads to the other main source of confusion: If
