Rc.exe Not Found Visual Studio 2015
I created an empty C++ project and added a main.cpp with a return and I can't get it to build. Here is the message I receive : 1>------ Build started: Project: Project1, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------ 1>LINK : fatal error LNK1158: cannot run 'rc.exe' ========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ========== Is there somewhere within VS2012 where I can specify where to find this executable? I have installed the Windows 7 SDK rc.exe download windows 7 and I have this executable at: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\Bin I come from Code::Blocks and using mingw-gcc without any trouble, but lately I've been needing VS for managed implementations so I hope someone has an idea. visual-studio-2012 share|improve this question asked Jan 17 '13 at 5:27 Patrick.SE 6902927 FYI - broken in Visual Studio 2013 Professional too :( –gbjbaanb Oct 18 '13 at 12:19 but it looks like the issue is the path to the windows SDK dir (or Windows Kits, whatever they are calling them this week). The $(WindowsSdkDir) var is not set to the WindowsKits directory, is set to the WindowsSDK dir instead which has 'minimal' contents. –gbjbaanb Oct 18 '13 at 15:53 add a comment| 8 Answers 8 active oldest votes up vote 16 down vote accepted Found this on Google... I would assume that in your case you would copy rc.exe and rcdll.dll to visual studio 2012\vc\bin or wherever you have it installed: Part 2: FIX LINK : fatal error LNK1158: cannot run ‘rc.exe’ Add this to your PATH environment variables: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\bin\x86 Copy these files: rc.exe rcdll.dll From C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.0\bin\x86 To C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\VC\bin Or I also found this: Microsoft left a few things out of their MSVT package. I've followed similar directions as is described at How to compile Matlab Engine in Visual Studio to set this up successfully to build to a 32-bit platform on a Windows 7 32-bit computer. Now I'm trying build to a 64-bit platform on a 64-bit (Windows 10) system. I'm pointing to all the include/libs and paths as described in the above link but when I go to build, I get the error: fatal error LNK1158: cannot run 'rc.exe'. The commonly described (discussion board) way to address this error is to copy rc.exe and rcdll.dll from C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\bin\x86 to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\VC\bin But this doesn't work. The primary question in my head as I try to debug this is that if I'm building for a 64-bit platform, should I really be copying rc.exe from the ...\8.1\bin\x86 folder? To address this, I instead copied rc.exe and rcdll.dll from the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\bin\x64 folder to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\VC\bin But that didn't work either. What am I doing wrong? 0 Comments Show all comments Tags c++ 64 bit matlab engine rc.exe Products MATLAB Related Content 1 Answer Eric Prechtl (view profile) 1 quest
hints (like missing links in the Registry and other bullshit)? You could not find rc.exe in the CAB files on the VS2008 Install DVD ? Thanks to ElmüSoft here is the solution: (I give you support for Microsoft products for free) It seems that a bug in the VS2008 installer does not install rc.exe if another version of Visual Studio (or the framework?) has already been installed before. Analyzing what msdev.exe does with SysInternals ProcessMonitor I found that Visual Studio searches the entire world to find rc.exe: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\VC\bin\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bin\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\Common7\Tools\bin\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\Common7\Tools\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\Common7\IDE\rc.exe C:\Program Files\HTML Help Workshop\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bin\rc.exe C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\rc.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9\rc.exe C:\Windows\SysWow64\rc.exe C:\Windows\System32\rc.exe C:\Windows\rc.exe C:\Windows\System32\wbem\rc.exe C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\rc.exe If it is not there in none of these folders then it spits out "Error spawning RC.exe". So my solution was simple: I copied rc.exe and rcdll.dll from my VS2005 installation into one of the above folders. After that the error disappeared and I saw another error: "Error spawning MT.exe" So I also copied mt.exe into the same folder and it compiled without error! It's so easy. If you don't have another Visual Studio installation where to take these files from, I offer my files here (they are from VS2005 but work also on VS2008): ErrorSpawningRcExe.zip If you don't trust me, upload the file to www.virustotal.com to see that there is no trojan in them.
