Hi All, So my latest round of battles with Tron took me in to the realms of Group Policy's. On site we were having policy issues. While investigating those issue i found the following message in the group policy events : Security policies were propagated with warning. 0x4b8 : An extended error has occurred. on http://support.microsoft.com. Query for "troubleshooting 1202 events". Now this wasnt realated to my original problem, however once that was fixed i had to investigate why i was getting errors everytime the group policy was refreshed. So i decided to have a prod around the web to see what i could find out. Unfortunately a lot of the resources seem to be old and relating to Windows Server 2000. The setup i was investigating is all Windows Server 2008 and virtualised with Windows 7 clients. This is why i decided to write up how i solved the problem. So after recieving the errors above in the Group Policy snap in i took a look at the event logs of a computer that had the policies applied and i got the following error : Event Type: Warning Event Source: SceCli Event Category: None Event ID: 1202 Date: date Time: time User: N/A Computer: computer_name Description : Security policies were propagated with warning.0x4b8 : An extended error has occurred. TroubleShooting : This is often related to groups and restricted groups as i found through prodding around google. So taking that into account we needed to try and determine what group might be causing this error. To do this, you need to enable debug logging for the Security Configuration client side extension. This is done by making a registry change on a workstation as below : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\GPExtensions\{827D319E-6EAC-11D2-A4EA-00C04F7 9F83A}

The following error is showing up in my event windows 7 viewer: ------------- Security policies are propagated with warning. 0x4b8 : An extended error has occurred. For best results in resolving this event, log on with a non-administrative account and search http://support.microsoft.com for "Troubleshooting Event 1202s". ------------- This does not happen every five minutes, like the associated KB articles state. Instead, they are showing up about troubleshooting 1202 events every three hours or so. I am also not using any XP computers in my environment, so the XP related solutions really shouldn't seem to apply. I attempted another suggested fix (on a test server), which was to analyize and rebuild the security database. This caused a large number of errors on the next reboot, hanging the server, and eventually forced me to rebuild the server... thus, I'm not going to attempt that on a production server. Other than the warnings, there does not appear to be anything adverse happing as a result of these errors. As a result, I'm uncertain if this should be a concern, or if attempting to fix it may result in more problems (which is what resulted on my test server). Suggestions / insight would be appreciated... thanks - More about : security policies propagated warning Anonymous a b 8 Security March 25, 2005 1:32:02 AM Archived from groups: microsoft.public.win2000.security (More info?)
