And, once again, because it is the "free" product, there is NO help from Avira, even though it is completely obvious this was caused during one of the latest "updates" of the product itself over the past week or so. It is also the reason I despise automatic updates, because with such a generic error that doesn't identify itself other than "update.exe" (like there are no other "update.exe" programs on any given pc), it becomes quite difficult to identify just which program is causing the error.
