I have never had previous difficulty with Cygwin, but after this reinstallation, an error message continues to appear after (almost) each command entered. For instance: -bash-4.1$ wc m1.txt 3 [main] bash 2216 child_info_fork::abort: data segment start: parent(0x26D000) != child(0x38D000) -bash: fork: cygwin for windows 7 64 bit retry: Resource temporarily unavailable 2013930 4027950 74968256 m1.txt Generally, the command still runs (as seen above), but not always. Occasionally, the 'error' message occurs several times in a row (the initial number "3" will then change to a "4" or "2", notably if I start a second Cygwin window. Also, as soon as I start up Cygwin, I get the following message before the prompt: 3 [main] bash 6140 child_info_fork::abort: data segment start: parent(0x26D000) != child(0x36D000) -bash: fork: retry: Resource temporarily unavailable -bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable -bash-4.1$ At the moment, I am debating whether to uninstall/reinstall Cygwin again or just live with the error messages, but I was curious if there might be an issue that I am unaware of. Thanks for your help! cygwin share|improve this question asked Feb 15 '12 at 20:21 David C 2,34312139 2 I found some similar problem here Do yo have and protection software/antivirus installed? This was working windows 7 really well. However, after recently updating to Windows 10 build 10586 via the official Windows Update method, Mintty fails to start. Reproduction scenario Install Windows 10 (build 10240 RTM) x64 and install Cygwin x64. Observe that using Mintty is working great. Run Windows update so it updates to build 10586. Observe that Mintty refuses to work anymore, and crashes with the error /usr/bin/mintty: could not cygwin windows 7 detach from caller Try '--help' for more information.'. Expected behaviour A working Mintty =) Shoot! If further questions exist, just ask. It runs this command: C:\cygwin64\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.i

Install the rebase package using the Cygwin setup.exe utility Close everything running that uses the cygwin1.dll Open a Cygwin shell Type rebaseall at the prompt Rebasing is usually only required when installed packages are installed that modify libraries that are dynamically loaded. I'll admit a bad habit of always running rebaseall after installing or upgrading packages in a Cygwin install rather than waiting for that error you hit to show up. As for why you got that error and how rebasing solves the problem, this post has this to say about it: You have it backwards. Forking doesn't break the relocation. Relocation breaks forking. cygwin1.dll needs to have a very special memory layout to implement the fork semantics in Win32. If this m
