error 0x8007232b during Windows activation. When attempting to activate a volume-licensed copy of Windows Vista / Windows Server 2008 or later (including both client and server operating systems), you may receive an error similar to the following: Activation Error: Code http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/SLN249706/en 0x8007232b
DNS Name does not exist This error is somewhat cryptic, providing no information on exactly what is missing from DNS or how it relates to activation. In later versions of Windows, it has been expanded for greater clarity: Windows could not be activated.
Key management services (KMS) host could not be located in domain name system (DNS), please have your system administrator verify that a windows 7 KMS is published correctly in DNS.
Error: 0x8007232b
Description:
DNS name does not exist. The most common cause of this issue is that no Key Management Service (KMS) host is present in the environment. As discussed in Using the Key Management Service for Activation of Volume-Licensed Systems, volume-licensed copies of Windows come preconfigured with a KMS client product key. When one of these machines tries to windows 7 activation activate Windows, it queries DNS for the SRV record associated with a KMS host server. If no KMS host is registered in DNS, error 0x8007232b results. If no KMS host is present in the environment, the machines receiving the error must have their product keys changed to multiple activation keys (MAKs), which allow volume-licensed copies of Windows to activate without using KMS. Like KMS host keys, MAKs are tied to a particular license agreement and must be retrieved from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC). If there is a KMS host present in the environment and KMS clients are still getting this error, the clients may not be using the correct DNS servers, or the KMS host may not have registered the proper SRV record in DNS. For information about the DNS record registered by a KMS host, see Registering a Key Management Service (KMS) Host Server in DNS. Other possible causes of this error exist and are documented in Microsoft Knowledgebase article KB929826: Error 0x8007232b or 0x8007007B occurs when you try to activate Windows. Need more help?
