Join Domain – Windows 7 or 2008 Server Written on December 23rd 2010 at 16:51. Last modified: November 15, 2011 DNS Issue Causes Problem Joining A Domain in Windows 2007 and Windows 2008 Server The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "your-domain-name" An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain being joined has failed. Please verify this client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS names in the target domain. For information about network troubleshooting, see Windows Help. Solution This error is being caused because the primary domain controller is not specified as the first DNS server in your TCP/IP settings on the system that you're trying to join to the domain. Even if your domain controller is not your DNS server, temporarily set the IP address of the domain controller as your first DNS server, join the domain and then change your DNS Server settings back to the way they were before. Full instructions below. Windows 7 or 2008 Server Instructions Click Start In the Search Programs and files field type View Network Connections and hit Enter When your Network Connections appear, right click on your active connection > click Properties Double-click Internet Protocol Version (TCP/IPv4) Update the Preferred DNS Server field with the IP address of your primary domain controller > Click OK > OK again Now try to join your domain again. Optionally, after successfully joining your domain you can change your DNS servers back.
