when your internet connection isn't working, and can differentiate between having local LAN access, no network access at all, or full internet access. But how? This week's question disable ncsi of the week is one I myself asked about this very topic. I guessed that there must be some online Microsoft site that Windows is checking to determine the state of the connection, but I wanted proof, not just speculation. How does Windows know whether it has internet access or if a Wi-Fi connection requires in-browser authentication? Tobias windows 10 ncsi Plutat and Jeff Atwood both replied with information about the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) service, first introduced in Windows Vista. When called on by Network Awareness, NCSI can add information about the following capabilities for a given network: Connectivity to an intranet Connectivity to the Internet (possibly including the ability to send a DNS query and obtain the correct resolution of a DNS name) NCSI is designed to be responsive to network conditions, so it examines the connectivity of a network in a variety of ways. For example, NCSI tests connectivity by trying to connect to http://www.msftncsi.com, a simple Web site that exists only to support the functionality of NCSI. How does it work? Windows does indeed check a Microsoft site for connectivity, using the Network Connectivity Status Indicator site. There are a few variations of the connection checking process: NCSI performs a DNS lookup on www.msftncsi.com, then requests http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt. This file is a plain-text file and contains only the text Microsoft NCSI. NCSI sends a DNS lookup r

rise to the top Name resolution DNS Client Event, DNS servers not responding, with internet disconnects up vote 1 down vote favorite I have a really small network in my house, with only three computers. Recently I've experienced my computer disconnecting from the internet for 3-5 http://blog.superuser.com/2011/05/16/windows-7-network-awareness/ seconds, and it only happens two or three times a day. I get this Warning message in the event logs: Event ID 1014, Warning Name resolution for the name dns.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded. The website dns.msftncsi.com isn't a constant, it's been a few random sites (i'm guessing whatever site i'm on at the time of disconnect.) My network consists of a windows 7 Desktop, Linux mint laptop, and a macbook pro. Discussion in 'Windows 7 Networking' started by clicheispasse, Jun 18, 2011. clicheispasse New MemberJoined:Jun 18, 2011Messages:10Likes Received:0 So I went to my event viewer, and this is what it says whenever it's happened the last couple of times: Name resolution for the name dns.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.Click to expand... The client was unable to validate the following as active dns.msftncsi.com error windows DNS server(s) that can service this client. The server(s) may be temporarily unavailable, or may be incorrectly configured. 68.94.156.1Click to expand... And I went back through older logs of when the same thing would happen, and those two were the ones that popped up the most. However, this also popped up from time to time: Name resolution for the name www.microsoft.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.Click to expand... Name resolution for the name www.australian-charts.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.Click to expand... Now, I know my way around a computer, but this internet talk is pure "gibberish" to me, for lack of a better word. Additional information: The connection to my router is wired, not wireless. My PS3 and my laptop can stay connected/have never dropped a connection, while my desktop does it enough that it's beginning to bother me. Any idea as to how I can fix this? #1 clicheispasse, Jun 18, 2011 Mike Windows Forum Admin Staff Member Premium SupporterJoined:Jul 22, 2005Messages:8,470Likes Received:776 On most home networks your DNS servers are being sent to your computer and other devices through a protocol called DHCP. Join Now I just opened a new Dell e6540 and everything was fine until I added it to the domain. Once I added it to the domain both the LAN and the WiFi show no internet connection, but I can get to the internet. I called dell, they said its a security policy in my domain. I disagree. I built this domain from the ground up and have very few policies. I checked anyways, but didn't see anything. Anybody know of the policy in a 2008 tree that would cause this? I also went to the firewall on the machine and turned it off, there is no AV on the machine as of yet. I went to the firm firewall and created a rule that allows all traffic through from the machines IP. The ipconfig shows all of the correct settings. I created a hotspot with my cell and connected to it wirelessly, and the connection icon went away. (the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark) after that, now when I connect to the local domain, it doesnt give me the triangle, but the LAN still does. I have disabled IPv6, that didn't help. I opened another new e6540 and after i joined it to the domain, it happened again. unjoined it from the domain, and it stays the same, the error is still there. I have flushed the DNS, disabled the NIC, uninstalled the NIC with driver and reinstalled and to no avail...its still broken. Any ideas would greatly be appreciated.
