I'll post as much info I can about my setup. I have 3 hard drives... one is for ubuntu (9.10), one is for my data, and one is for Windows7. It looks like this: 1st drive (hda) = ubuntu 2nd drive (hdb) = data 3rd drive (hdc) = windows I used to be able to dual boot no problem (via grub menu) until I updated to Ubuntu 9.10 awhile ago. Now I get the ever so popular "Error 13" message anytime I try to boot into Windows. I've tried everything with regards to tweaking my menu.lst file. The odd thing is, if I physically remove drives 1 & 2, my computer will boot into windows with no problem, which sort of tells me that I don't need to run any recovery on the windows drive. Anyhow, here's an output of relevant info. Any help would truly be appreciated. sudo fdisk -l Code: Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk identifier: 0x76a6af7e Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 1 58336 468583888+ 83 Linux /dev/sda2 58337 60801 19800112+ 5 Extended /dev/sda5 58337 60801 19800081 82 Linux swap / Solaris WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdb'! If this is the case, wait a few minutes, I am just about posting a (hopefully) "final guide" for such cases. Wonko P.S.: Done, here:http://reboot.pro/to...s-7-unbootable/ It happened like two days ago, I was doing system restore and after that i got some bootmgr error so i ignored it, computer continue to function But the next day when I boot up my computer, i start getting those error 13, I did windows update (could this be the causal of the missing bo
Linux Ubuntu installation on the machine (as any Windows install will do). By the way - if you want to install Windows 7 on a free partition to dual boot, its https://emalliab.wordpress.com/2009/10/27/error-13-invalid-or-unsupported-executable-format/ possible, but I had to make the free partition ‘active' to make Windows recognise https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120305111632AA1lvSl it as a ‘system' partition … but I digress. Anyway, I followed the instructions in this post - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351 - to restore the boot loader (Grub) and get Linux booting again, but then had to add an entry to allow me to select the new Windows installation. Well, again I was able to use the usual windows 7 way you get another non-Linux OS running within Grub, and there are loads of resources on the Internet to tell you how to do this. For me it was an entry like this in menu.lst: title Windows 7 rootnoverify (hd0,1) makeactive chainloader +1 But I was getting the error "Invalid or Unsupported Executable Format". After quite a bit of searching around, with lots of varied responses to this particular error, I grub windows 7 just couldn't see what was wrong. Then, after staring at the grub configuration for quite a long time, eventually I realised that the rootnoverify command had no space between the rootnoverify and the brackets - i.e. "rootnoverify(hd0,1)" … after adding a space, as shown above, all was well. This post is just in case someone else has the same problem, and to remind them that before they start trying all the variants of grub commands and partition numbers that the Internet serves up in response to that error, do check the exact syntax of the menu.lst file first!
