You may have an incorrect device driver installed for the CD-ROM device. To resolve it, please delete UpperFileter and LowerFilters in the following registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} Here are detailed steps: 1. Click the Start Button, type regedit in the "Start Search" text box and then press ENTER. 2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 3. Right click the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} entry, choose "Export", select Desktop in the Save in box and type backup in File Name. Click Save. It used to. I've checked the System Registry and it has 7026 service control lots of info about that ATAPI drive, but my system fails to find the "cdrom" driver (which is the one Windows 7 uses by default). It's not a 3rd-party driver. The tray on my CD/DVD drive opens and closes properly. Windows just won't recognize the drive, so I can't use it. I'm hoping someone can offer a 'manual' solution to get it working again. I do not want to spend a month to reinstall my OS and tons of hard-to-configure software. I've read countless other posts and solutions, both here and on MS's sites. The info on MS's sites is not even understandable. It's too vague and often doesn't even apply to my situation. The cdrom has stopped working (or never worked after installing windows) and I can't figure out for the life of me why it's not working. When the computer starts up cdrom is fine. Then it dissapears from the device manager and explorer. It vanishes without a trace and in the event log is the following message: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: cdrom
