Remote Connection Windows 7 Home Premium
tried to set up a PPTP connection to a remote server but didn't succeed. This is what I tried:- Network

The thing ist that Windows tries to use a modem while I want to connect directly via LAN. I enter an IP address, but Windows puts it in a field that is otherwise used for a telephone number.As I didn't find an appropriate restore point, I uninstalled several applications that install virtual modems or virtual network interfaces - without success. Perhaps some more information of what you are doing might help. Otherwise, the only advice I can give is : Try to fully patch Windows by using Windows Update, including all optional updates (except bing) See if Device Manage has an entry for Modems; if yes, delete it and reboot Find out your network adapter manufacture and search for firmware update Update the firmware of your router Check system integrity via sfc /scannow If nothing works, the next step is a Repair Install to fix Windows while preserving your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers. share|improve this answer answered Aug 30 '14 at 13:01 harrymc

It's not server side as other users can connect without issue. Client: Windows 7 professional DC: SBS2011The user gets "Connection failed with error 797" every time. It appears the PC is trying to connect using a modem but I can't see how to make it use the proper network adapter. I've removed every mention of modems I could find but it hasn't made a difference. Recreated the VPN connection and rebooted the laptop multiple times. Any ideas? I ask because the one time I saw this occur (and it was also only affecting one user) it was because the user had received a NIC driver update that didn't take correctly. So I ended up removing the driver and the NIC, letting Windows detect it, and then installing a clean driver.As soon as I did this, the issue was resolved and the user re-gained access to the VPN. I can't remember off the top of my head the exact warning, but what tripped it was a notice in the event viewer about the driver.
