At home (VPN server side), I have my Windows 7 configured to receive incoming connections via PPTP. Port is forwarded this server on my Virginmedia superhub (a Netgear modem/router for my fibre optic BB). On client side, I simply VPN connect to my home network and it worked like a breeze for 3 months. Suddenly anywhere I am and on any PC, I cannot seem to log on to my home network via VPN anymore. The VPN client is definitely connecting as it reaches the stage of verifying username and password, then it hangs and finally gives the error 806 which is of this description: http://www.howtonetworking.com/vpnissues/error806.htm I tried most trouble shooting areas including setting up the server Vpn on another PC, switching off all firewalls etc. I even rolled back the VPN server to an old restore point. It seems according to the error, internet protocol 47 GRE

I have setup routing and remote access on Server 2008. I'm trying to use PPTP. I have windows 7 pptp vpn no internet access enabled PPTP and GRE on firewalls on both the server and client. What I think might be the problem is my router. It is a Netgear WGR614v10. I have read that the SPI firewall needs http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/416675/vpn-error-806-hangs-on-verifying-username-and-password/ to be disabled. But I do not see this firewall in the settings. What I see is a Disable Port Scan and DoS Protection option. But when I disable this it still doesn't work. But I'm not even sure if this is the problem. I feel like I have exhausted all my options. But I'm sure there is something I'm missing. Thanks in advance! But the long response on the netgear support didn't work either. If you can think of anything else let me know. It could verify if theTo New Topics Error 806: a connection between your computer and the VPN server has been established but the VPN connection http://www.howtonetworking.com/vpnissues/error806.htm cannot be completed. The most common cause for this is that there is at least one internet device between your computer and the VPN server is not configured to allow GRE protocol packets Verify that protocol 47 GRE is allowed on all personal firewall devices or routers. if the problem persists, contact your administrator. Resolutions: 1) if you have a router/firewall, make sure you open TCP Port windows 7 1723, IP Protocol 47 (GRE). 2) make sure you can reach the VPN server by using ping. Sometimes, poor connection can cause this issue too. 3) You may need to updated firmware on a router or firewall. 4) The VPN server may not be able to get IP from DHCP for the VPN client. So, you may want to re-configure VPN host networking settings. For XP pro VPN windows 7 pptp host, go to the Properties of the VPN>Network, check Specify TCP/IP address and Allow calling computer to specify its own IP address, and uncheck Assign TCP/IP addresses automatically using DHCP. 5) Make sure other secure software blocks your access, for example, if you use Norton secure software, you may need to add the remote client's IP so that the client can access. 6) If your VPN running on a Windows RRAS with NAT enabled, you may want to check the NAT settings.
