Sign in to vote Anyone tried deleting a registry key in Windows 7? Got "access denied" or "Error while deleting key"? The usual response is, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2021860 "You need to run regedit as an administrator". but I *AM* logged in as Administrator, and running regedit as administrator, trying to assign administrator full permissions on that registry key in order to delete it!! Am I mistaken, or isn't Administrator supposed to be able to administer and control https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/56fed319-a532-46a4-a384-fd795998c4a3/regedit-permissions-access-denied-or-error-while-deleting-key-even-as-admin?forum=w7itproinstall all the settings on the computer, in order to set it up for the "Average Joe" user? So, under the permissions menu of that key, go to advanced, change the owner from System to Administrator, and try again. It's no longer saying "access denied", but "Cannot delete xxxxxx. Error while deleting key". The scenario: Basically, the wireless has stopped working on a laptop. The device does not show up in Device Manager, but is in the registry, so the normal procedure is to delete the registry entry for the device in HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet (and /ControlSet001) /Enum/PCI ,then attach the device or restart the computer, it finds the "new" hardware and reinstalls it. Easy!... Not with permission restrictions on the administrator account it's not! So I need to give myself permission, to give myself permission, to do a simple task like delete a single registry key! Why, Microsoft, why???

... Error while deleting key." CAUSE When dealing with a Windows NT bases computer (NT, 2000, XP, 2003, etc), this is normally caused by the currently logged in user not having permissions to modify or delete the key. Some keys will not allow any user to modify or delete them. SOLUTION Make sure that the logged in user has admin permissions on the machine. If this is already the case, then follow these steps in order to set the permissions for the key to allow it to be deleted.NOTE:The KEY is only visible in the left hand window of the standard Registry Editor (REGEDIT). It will be the one that has it’s folder icon open instead of closed. You can also find the path to the Key in the status bar at the bottom of the Registry Editor. If the status bar is not present, click on View -> Status Bar to enable it.Windows 2000Windows XP / 2003 / Vista / 7Windows 2000 Check the Status Bar to find the path to the key you are getting the error from. You will need to position the two windows so that you can see the status bar of the original Registry editor. - The REGEDT32 (Also called Registry Editor) will have a window open for each of the HKEY entries on that computer. Click theTitle Bar(blue bar at the top) for the HKEY section that the key is in. Double-click on the folders in order to “browse” to the location of the key in question - EX: “My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_067b&Pid_2501”.
