I Remove It? Posted June 28, 2010 by David Kirk in Windows
Why do I see the desktop.ini file in every folder? How can I get rid http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/6108/windows-7-what-is-the-desktop-ini-file-and-how-can-i-remove-it/ of it? One of my neighbors called today asking me all of these questions. Let me explain the function and purpose of this ubiquitous mysterious file. What is the Desktop.ini file? This http://www.howtogeek.com/forum/topic/desktopini-missing hidden file is placed in every folder to tell the operating system how to display and customize the viewing of that specific folder. For example, this allows a folder to have a windows 7 custom icon. Microsoft has more boring info about customizing folders with this file. Why did this file suddenly appear? The file is typically set as both a hidden and system file. Most people start to notice the desktop.ini file after globally setting their system to show hidden system files and folders. Often it is most noticeable on the desktop. By resetting this setting to on startup windows hide these files, the desktop.ini files will no longer be visible. Can I just delete these files? Deleting these files will just remove any customizations set by the desktop.ini file. Although it should not hurt your system, trying to delete these files can be frustrating as the Windows operating system may rebuild them. Hello everyone, i want to ask something. i unchecked "hide protected operating system files" and "check show hidden files". I found that in my destop, i only have one destop.ini file. I've checked my friends pc, my other pc, running windows vista, there are two desktop.ini on the desktop(two files with the same name in one place). So, i want to ask, what is the function of this file? And is anyone there can help me to bring it back the missing desktop.ini to my desktop? Thank You Reports: · Posted 6 years ago Top pcs3652 Posts: 91 This post has been reported. Hi, Desktop.ini is used to tell Windows how to display a folder. For example, enabling Thumbnail view creates a desktop.ini file in that folder which amongst other things, tells Windows to add an extra item to the View menu for that folder. Desktop.ini files are also used when you customize folders, change their icons etc. Let your desktop icons and files be as it is. No need to create or add new desktop.ini file. One of these files is important, which contains the info. for the icons. Which one of yours is missing? Open your desktop's desktop.ini, copy its stuff, and post (paste) it here. If it is the one with the icon info, its ok, because the difference between both files is only of ONE LINE, which is about the icons. I guess it doesn't matter if you are missing the one without the icon data However if you need both files, you can make the missing one yourself. But first, you need to check which one is missing.
