new partition. Make sure to take a moment and decide how much space to use for the XP partition. Make sure you have enough space on your hard drive for files you’ll be adding to each. Create a New Partition The first thing we need to do is create a new partition on the Windows 7 machine. Luckily we can do it without any 3rd party software. To begin, click on Start and type either partition or disk management how to install windows 7 over xp professional into the search box and at the top of the menu click on Create and format hard disk partitions. The Disk Management window opens, and from here we need to free up space on the (C:) drive Windows 7 is installed on. Right-click on the drive and select Shrink Volume. A window pops up showing the drive is being queried for available space. Now enter the amount of space you want to shrink the volume. You’re shown the total size of the disk and the amount of size that is available to shrink. In this example we’re freeing up 40GB of space. After the process completes you’ll see the new Unallocated space. Right-click that and select New Simple Volume. The New Simple Volume Wizard launches which is a straight forward process. When you get to the Format Partition section, NTFS is selected by default as the file system and you can leave that as is. You might want to rename the Volume label something else like “XP Partition” so it’s easier to identify when installing XP. Also you’ll probably want to make sure to check Perform a Quick Format. After the format is complete you will see the new volume as a healthy partition listed. Now when you go into My Computer you’ll see the the new disk and notice that space has been taken away from the (C:) drive Windows 7 is inst

The reason why is XP will install it's own (older) version, and XP's boot manager can not boot to win 7. Repairing using the Win 7 disc will re-install Win7's boot manager, which can start XP. Not an accurate statement: If you have Win 7 Pro or higher, you may download and install a virtualized XP environment which would enable you to run apps specifically written for the older OS. But since it's a virtualized environment, it can't use hardware acceleration (read: "XP Mode is lousy for gaming"). Therefore it's applicable mostly to a business environment for backwards compatibility of existing custom code. Understand this is nothing you can't already do with tools like VM Ware. Just that MSFT are giving it for free, provided you purchase the appropriate version of the OS and/or have a support contract that covers it. Contrary to popular belief/rumor, "XP Mode" does not turn Windows 7 into "XP 2010". Score 0 cheetahra 7 October 2009 17:36:24 I have the same problem. One of the most common problems encountered in configuring a dual-boot between Windows XP and Windows Vista happens when you try to install Windows XP on a computer with Windows 7/Vista already https://neosmart.net/wiki/easybcd/dual-boot/windows-xp/installing-second/ installed. When you install Windows XP, it'll remove the bootmgr/BCD used by newer versions of Windows (Vista, 7, & 8) and use its own instead. Prepping the Machine for an XP Installation The first thing to do is to get your system ready for installing Windows XP. There are windows 7 over a couple of things you need to do: Do you already have a free partition or a separate physical disk that you can install Windows XP to? If so, skip on to the next section. Download the free GParted Live CD or use a commercial partition editor, and boot into it. Use the partition manager to shrink the partition with Windows Vista/7 to make enough room at the end of the drive for Windows XP. Add a new partition located after the Windows Vista/7 partition you just shrunk. Make sure it has been formatted as NTFS. It doesn't need to be primary, and should not be active. Reboot into the Windows XP setup CD It's very important to make sure that this partition was created at the end of the drive, or else you might no longer be able to boot into Windows because your partition numbers and offsets have changed. Installing Windows XP If you're installing Windows XP to a separate physical drive, do not disconnect the Windows Vista or Windows 7 drive, and do not change the drive boot order in the BIOS. This will not help and will make it terribly difficult to get your dual-boot working again! You canno
